Is there a way to turn off the chat log window?

you can hide it,

If you are playing with a controller, lets say, an xbox 360 controller, get the focus on the chatbox, press X button and the first option you get is to hide it.
Same result should be attained with a PS controller's Square button, or right clicking the mouse on the tabs of the chatbox.

You can also mute the sound effects in the chat options which location in the character configuration menu I dont remember right now... but with that totally off and the box hidden, you will soon forget its existence altogether... I do that and miss a lot of important conversations!

Press Select or any regular key on the keyboard to get focus on the chatbox and it will reveal itself anew.

Yeah I knew you could hide it but I want it off. I like to be in my own world when I craft

It's not a HUD element, believe it or not.
To answer you, papichulo, the chat log cannot be completely removed. However you can remove the chat from within the log, and resize it down to the smallest possible area space.
