Newbie Fanfest/Convention Attender Looking for Advice!

So Fanfest was announced for FALL '16, and I am totally hyped because I missed out on the last one. But I need some advice from those that went to the last FanFest, and/or those that are convention veterans, so I can start budgeting and getting prepared.

- What to expect? (I've been informed that there's lots of waiting in lines, but what else?)
- How much did you spend?/How much should I save up for? (Food, goodies, other expenditures?*)
* You don't have to include ticket/plane/lodging, that's already factored in.
- Cosplay? Worth it? Getting it to Vegas in one piece an issue?

Any experience from FanFest or just general con-going advice that you'd like to share, I would appreciate greatly. My likely set up is, flying to Vegas, crashing at a friend's place, driving to the actual convention, and then con shenanigans, if that helps at all.
