I'm pretty sure I'm not the first person to think of this, but can we have some way of combining materias? For instance, 3x of one materia converts to 1 of the next tier'd materia?

For example: 3 Mind I's turns into 1 Mind II.

Other then that, I shouldn't be getting tier 1 and 2's from lv 41+ gear.

It's actually Horadric Cube. You're missing an r. Nitpicking aside, I agree 100%. Tired of getting crap Materia from high level HQ items.... Dated Toadskin Mitts +2 gave me a T1 Mind Materia. Really?

They said early on that the quality of converted gear has no effect in the resulting grade of materia.
...further testing indicates that the optimal level of the converted gear can influence the grade, however it is not a guarantee regardless.

I'd rather have a Deckard Cain doing the materia cubing for me. I have inventory crisis. No space for carrying around a 2x2 item.

I wonder what the point of having the lower tier materia is in the first place. Nobody uses it, and the lower levels go by so fast that it's pointless to put materia on anything. I'd rather farm the gil to buy it than play the RNG game. This seems like a good niche for Alchemy to fill.
