Any other fans of the orginial Voltron tv show "Sqeeee!" when seeing the 3.2 trailer?

So basically, there is a new boss coming up in Alexander Midas (probably the end boss) which is a large combining robot... just like power rangers, getter robo, transformers and other current robot genre anime/tv shows.

However, there is something very specific and nostalgic about *how* this robot merges into it's giant robot form. This robot's style of combining isn't really like any other specific robot but *one*: Voltron!

Here is it from the 3.2 trailer:
    https://youtu.be/CZET2yYZLN8?t=7m26s

    And here is...Voltron!:
    https://youtu.be/1uS5b8aQ6z8?t=1m12s

Is that the nostagia goggles on me or isn't that the very same type of transformation. Down from the one larger robot in the middle, with the other 4 smaller once surrounding it...they are all surrounded in electricity as the smaller robots transform and rotation *simultaneously* into the correct positions and when they all lock into place *then* the head forms on the main bot.....etc I mean there was more similarities but... I'll stop with just those...lest I go total nerd. But yea I wonder if the gobby in the main bot will say the iconic "And I'll form the head" at the end... lol

Did anyone else watch that and also think it screams Voltron? Any other 80s-90s kids?

Lol...ya, it might just be the nostalgia goggles on me like I said. :P Voltron used to be on saturday mornings just right around when the original power rangers came out on tv (which was right after school). I watched both. Someone correct me but Voltron is a fairly old show though? It might have been one of the earliest combining robot shows. And, I know the devs are a bunch of older adults so it just made me wonder if they were aiming at a homage to any particular show they liked or just a mottled combination.

Except Voltron is about a decade older. It's like Power Rangers' awesome older brother. :3

Fun fact: I'm wearing a Voltron T-shirt. I think this makes me old. And a nerd. I'm an old nerd.

Voltron is way older then power rangers. Voltron is the English dubbed version of a Japanese cartoon called Go Lion.

Yea I'm struggling to think of a older one with combining robots quite like that. Technically power rangers zoids combined in a similar way, but voltron did it first. But the zoids combine in a different order. That sort of simultaneous combine thing sort of screams voltron to me.

Iono if it even matters though. I'm just trying to mentally connect with whatever the devs were thinking on that boss. I wonder their ages... that might help make more of a certain choice there. Also, I find it a bit hard to believe that the JP devs ever really watched "power rangers" as it was a heavily edited version of their JP tv show "super sentai"? I think? But the JP version had the same zoid scenes, just the original actors were japanese of course, so all the scenes with the NA actors were the edits.

And then of course, the whole reason the "power rangers" type costumes and such came into being was because JP made a spider-man type super hero show in the 80s and it spawned this "power ranger" genre of people in colored leotards? lol :P

The Go Lion anime was 1981, but Goranger (what is now considered the first Super Sentai series, aka Power Rangers in the US) was 1975. They didn't use the "giant robo" in Super Sentai until 1979 though, and the first multi-robo transformation wasn't until 1988. Still, it was the same company (Toei) that was involved in both the GoLion anime and the GoRanger / Super Sentai live action series, so you might as well consider the "5 people joining forces to use a giant robot to fight baddies" to be a product of the same people at the same general time period. There were just limits to live action tv shows that didn't pose a problem for anime.

"Power Rangers" is a lot older than people think, it just didn't get a Western adaptation until Saban thought he could capitalize on the Ninja Turtle craze of the early 90s.

Who's the more nerdish, the nerd, or the nerd who corrects him?

On a side trivia note, the live action giant robot battle shows that Toei does ACTUALLY started with the live action Spiderman series Toei did in 1978. Spiderman was given a giant robot for some odd reason, and that idea was reused for the 3rd Super Sentai series that aired in 1979. So thank Spiderman-sempai for your childhood Power Rangers.

Beast King: Go Lion was also more violent and was its own thing that came out in 1981. The vehicles were a completely different series and not as popular a follow up in the west. Power Rangers technically had their first giant robot in 1979 (Battle Fever J) but it was laiter (84/~85? Bioman or the one before it) they had their first multi vehicle combining giant robot. Not something packed in or turning into the thing carrying it. Its kind of a close call unless there was another series that was doing what Voltron did with its team controlling the various parts of the robot.

Voltron also had parts that were different colors before any of the Super Sentai. The boss in the trailer had the general color and scale setup more closer to Voltron than Power Rangers. I'm calling it a Voltron reference, unless they are each piloted by a goblin in powerranger-ish matching color outfit and do the same non practical group posing that would make Captain Ginu smile.
