Part of the reason they probably went with level 60 instead of level 50 is that, at least for players who have been at the game for awhile, there's no guarantee they've actually played a level 50 job recently. Before I picked up DRG a month or so to finally take it to 60, I hadn't touched it at all since 2.2, which was in...March of 2014, I think? That was two years ago—if DRG had been my only DPS class, I'd probably be pretty rusty on DPS fundamentals by that point. Anyone with level 60 on a role, though, has likely played that role sometime within the last few months, which means they'll probably be more comfortable offering pointers and the like. This isn't to say that someone who hasn't tanked for 2 years couldn't offer tips—but this is just one way to make sure that the mentors with those roles have recently engaged with them.

It's also probably level 60 in part to "wow" new players. Having someone who has obviously invested a lot of time into the game take time out to help you will probably feel cool to new folks, and level 60 is, ultimately, more impressive than level 50, since a newcomer to the game may not realize that the old level cap was 50.

Oh i know the perfect requirement they should have asked:
    * posses a zeta weapon from a tank, a healer and a dps!
=> this way they would be sure you played a lonnnnng time on each of these job (most of the steps need you to play on the weapon job itself, no shortcut possible)
(oh wait i meet this requierements too. **shhh** )

Well i guess the requierment they really asked is ridiculous compared to this
But i dont think they need elitist mentors.

More seriously, the main aim is to help new players.
From what i see, the new mentor system itself will easily provide 2 things:

    - Short dungeon queue for new players.
Most of you dont necessary remember that, but when you need to do a specific low dungeon to go on storyline, and you are queuing as a dps.... it can take forever to trigger.
Or at least a time discouraging new players.
(I still remember (while creating a player on another server), queuing for "Cape Westwind (Trial)" for days (back in days) cause it was on no roulette and no one but new players were queuing it)

    - Friendly behaviour from at least mentors.
Right? all mentors are here cause they like helping, right? No matter if they re arguing how hard the mentor requierement are, they re still here cause they like to help, right?
Once again, i remember a lot of dungeon farmer being extremly rude, tring to save some minutes on their rush, no matter what.
And still again we dont want new player to be scared.

So i d say that, set aside from us being a good mentor or not, the mentor system will already be a success with these 2 points alone.
Moreover when most achievement hunters mode will be over, i guess we ll find only mentors that truely like to help.

Agreed. People are complaining about having to have a tank or healer at lvl 60. When most players they are mentoring are dps players. I highly doubt the mentoring roulette will say it needs a dps compared to a tank or healer.

The problem with OP's train of thought is that he assumes he'll be mentoring a DRG, when in actuality the mentee could play any role. Having a functional understanding of each role allows for a better mentoring experience.

I actually think the mentor requirements are very LAX TBH. I thought they should have been more involved and more limiting but I do understand that this would seriously limit the potential player count of those who wish to mentor and would probably create a disproportionate demand for mentors assuming that there is a demand at all. But overall I don't think the requirements are too high at all. If you don't have a tank/healer/dps at 60 you aren't really capable of understanding on an in depth level the synergy between these things to any substantial degree. Granted having them all there doesn't mean you understand it either, it does however create a basis from which one has at least the personal experience to understand. I am still waiting to actually USE the system to pass judgements on it, crazy I know. But I don't think these requirements are too high at all. With one class at 60 and less than 1000 duties you are barely scratching the surface on understanding the totality of the game. The requirements are broad yet adequate IMO for the way it seems the system is being setup. I look forward to being able to help others understand the game.

Well, there shouldn't be any requirements for being a mentor other than time played based on your account, not on any specific character. If you've got 90 days in or so, you should be allowed to mentor. What do commendations and dungeon runs really prove? Comms are just supposed to be a means of expressing appreciation to a random person; using them to gate a community role is tacky.

90 days don't mean anything either by that same logic. If commendations can be farmed, along with 1000 dungeon runs, then one can easily farm 90 days by just logging in for the Gold Saucer. If commendations and dungeon runs don't prove anything, then neither do days played.

"Hello, I'm having issues healing tanks during speed runs. Can you give me some advice on which abilities and skills I should be starting off with?" "I'm also having issues trying to dps. What is the best time to enter Cleric Stance?"

Mentor isn't some free pass to a new DF and chat log. It's there to help new players.

As your Tank Senpai I will help my DPS kôhai know when to use CD's properly instead of using B4B right as the Boss leaves the screen for 30s or uses an AoE that will fatally harm them. I can also teach Healers when they are safe to Regen and DPS if they feel comfortable. I can also show the BLM and Bow Magus where to stand to avoid damage for maximum up time in a fight.
You learn stuff like this playing every role at least to a Basic Level. The point being I doubt anyone could face roll their way through the Mentor requirements without having some knowledge to offer you.
