    CWH Dragon

Anyone know anything about this poor fellow?:

Noticed him awhile back and figured there has to be some story behind him.

    Also, these fellows:

Probably just background, but may as well ask.

I don't think we've found background on him... but either Vishap isn't one of a kind, or Ishgard went to extreme lengths to hang him up as a warning.

It seems to be much smaller that Vishap(he seems more the size of The Watcher), and I can't seem to find any wounds on it, aside from the chains themselves. I don't know if its dead, or just unresponsive.

Also, that circular area (Bed of Bones/Red Rim) on the map has a bunch of small off shot caves like this one, almost like display cabinents, the mammoths are in another one of the caves off of it.

I wasn't around for the 1.0 days, did we have access to this area, and if so, was it different at that time?

Coerthas was quite different back then

The Calamity changed the climate for the whole Coerthas area, there are some hints that the weather change came about very suddenly in Western Coerthas (as in a matter of seconds). It's likely those poor Mammoths were caught in the big freeze.

Ah, ty, I knew it was a bit different, didn't know if the Bed of Bones area still existed.

Side day dream, wouldn't it be nice to see the Dreaming Dragon come to life? I really like all the things you find in CWH...

It could be a Vishap-like species of dragon (think of moss/fire/ice/turtle-type dragons) they're just rarer than the other types of dragons (maybe due to never reaching full grown due to getting killed?)

From doing the quests in the convictory quests we know that the dragon hunters like to kill weaker dragon and display their corpse to hopefully lure more (preferable stronger) dragons because dragon do mourn their dead allies.

Best guess is that it's hanging there to lure a stronger dragon and to probably spite them; it IS plain to see if you're flying. At Least that's my theory

I thought it was Vishap at 1st, but it was pointed out that it's smaller and also has a reddish tinge to it

Dreaming Dragon? Figured it out, it's totally Seath the Scaleless. Actually if you look closely at the dragon, you'll notice that it's eyes have been removed. The dragon in question is likely Ratatoskr, the original dragon slain by Thordan and his Knights. Thordan consumed the eyes of that dragon, thus the entire dragon lineage of Ishgard was perpetuated (highborn, etc.) So there you go.

Ratatoskr was killed in what we know call the Churning Mists. Are you suggesting they carried the body all the way to Coerthas for some reason? My money's on Vishap or a vishap-class dragon. If it was Ratatoskr that'd be monumentally lame considering she's one of the big seven--all of which have been "unique" models.

And nah, those areas weren't referenced in 1.0 nor did we have access to a place which should be where they are now.

I don't think it is Ratatoskr for a couple of reasons. It's too small, for one, and it wouldn't seem wise to commit a grave crime (big enough to start a war) and pin the evidence up in a cave so close to a major city. The side-quests in the area reveal that there was actually a full sized settlement nearby that was buried by Bahamut's nuclear winter. No one would look twice at it now, given that most living Ishgardian's were raised on a twisted history and faith going back hundreds of years, but back when there was peace between man and dragon it would have looked pretty suspicious to have one strung up in a cave with it's eyes ripped out.

I am interested in it's missing eyes though. If they are actually missing (I haven't gone to take a look myself yet, and I can't say I paid much attention to it the first time I was in the cave) then it stands to follow that the Dragon was powerful enough for someone to want them. It also stands to reason that the dragon may not, in fact, be dead. If it's eyes are returned to it, it's possible it could reanimate. This would explain it's apparent lack of decomposition.

If I had to take a guess, I would say that the dragon in the cave is likely the leader of whatever brood was in the area of Dusk Vigil. If you go just west of that dungeon, there's evidence of a battle and the remains of several dragons (which are not really talked about all that much in the MSQ). I would expect that this dragon was involved in that conflict, was likely lured into the cave during the battle, and skewered. The only question is, who did it and why did they chose to remove the eyes instead of flat out killing the dragon?

That conflict was detailed in 3.1's sightseeing log (fingers crossed that 3.2 has a sightseeing log update!)

These mountains on the outskirts of Ishgard were valued as a mining site for slate of exceptional quality. Three years past, the knights of House Dzemael attempted to carve an Ishgardian stronghold into the cliffs, enraging the dragon Cuelebre and his followers. Remnants of the gruesome battle that followed still lie scattered about the crags, unable to decay in the chilled altitude.
