Indeed. Whether jaded, salty people believe it or not, there are a lot of people for whom some story elements in SAO really touch them. Actually SAO has several elements that hit me, not least of which is Kirito and Asuna sitting together at the end of the Ancrad arc, watching Aincrad dissappear, as they also disappear from that world.

For me personally, that resonates because my wife and I stayed online all night saying good by to all our guild mates & friends in White Knight Chronicles 2 when that game was sadly terminated. We sat and watched the water in a stream flowing through my wife's Georama (town), listening to the birdsong that was part of the environment, and watching the cherry blossom fall; waiting for the servers to die. Sony/Level5/D3 had decided in their wisdom to quite abruptly kill the game after less than 2 years of life. We'd invested so much time and effort into our guild and playing that game with our friends, that when it was suddenly taken away, it was a real sense of loss and pain. Watching Kirito and Asuna struggle with the end of Aincrad, knowing that it meant the end of the world they'd lived in together, for years, just brings it all back to me - as does writing this.

For that matter, there are many who find the back stories in other shows/games moving too. For example, KOS-MOS & Shion from Xenosaga - I could write an entire dissertation on what those characters mean to me, and how they illuminate my life.

Another good example would be Idom@ster, a game/Anime no one would ever believe could have real emotion or meaning. Watch it, pay attention to Chihaya's story. Every person I know who's watched the IdolM@ster anime is moved by her story, most to tears or at least damp eyes...

The point is that Anime (and other media) characters have special meaning to individual people, they resonate with something in that person's experience. So Why does anyone feel a need to critique a character name chosen by another player?

If anything, understanding where a player's name comes from, gives us some insight into their personality.

Kosmos was my character in White Knight Chronicles 1 & 2 and was clearly and intentionally a tribute to KOS-MOS from Xenosaga. I always have an Alt character called Shion Uzuki as well. When WKC2 was taken from us myself, my wife and our friends made Eorzea our new home, and after playing Kosmos for so many hours in WKC, I simply couldn't bear to let Kosmos die with WKC. So, Kosmos was reborn in Eorzea, as was Shion. ...and now you know the rest of the story.

...no one made that kind of thread?
This is a thread about anime names, that's all. The basic question that started it all was "Does your character have an anime name?" and most people ended up answering some form of "No, because I generally dislike it".

That's how discussions are, you are free to stick to whatever you like, but you can't expect everyone to be totally supportive of it and like it too.
If I make a thread asking "Hey, are you all into roleplaying?" I can't expect every answer to be "Yeah, totally, and my character is xyz! ", instead I'd probably get a lot of "Nah, roleplaying isn't my thing but if people enjoy it, good for them, I guess?"-answers and maybe even a few "Honestly, it bothers me when they do that in general chat/makes me uncomfortable/etc." type of answers.

No reason to feel it is a personal attack. You put your name out there as an example so I naturally used it to explain what I see wrong with names like these.
And again, I'd never bother anyone about their name ingame. I know a handful of Rinoas, a Noctis, one Uzumaki and one Asuna. They are all great people. Maybe you are as well, after all, I don't know you.
I never talked to them about their names, but that doesn't mean that I don't have an opinion on it. I kind of assumed a thread which is meant to talk about these kinds of names was a place where I could honestly say that I dislike them, but somehow that's already considered an insult..?

Like pretty much everyone in this thread who expressed their dislike for these types of names said, it's basically just a slight annoyance, something you just live with. It would be rude and unnecessary to confront anyone with that. But it doesn't mean that everyone you know doesn't judge your name in some way just because they never said anything.
(again, your name is an example because you brought it up as one. There are many that I consider much, much worse)

Btw, why do I get 2 seperate answers? xD

Again, fantasy game, and in this fantasy game I wanna be a catgirl.

While we're talking about it, my problem with your character is actually that you chose to name her after someone who wasn't in the source canon. Her character is an insertion into an already fleshed out and complete universe by someone who had little to no grasp of the author's intent for the story. Therefore, I find her cheap, trashy and out-of-place. So that's what I think of when I see your name.

But whatever. Basically inconsequential to me.

Do people really care this much about what other people wanted to name their characters? I don't even pay too much attention to them anyways, unless they're hilarious. I would rather see anime names then one I came across last night in a dungeon with something along the lines of burp n fart -___-

Since I wanted to be a bard, I named mine after Tauriel from The Hobbit (cause she's awesome), and then Kyudo because its the japanese martial art of archery
It sounds exaggerated when people talk about it like this, but I don't think anyone really gives it more than half a second's thought. It's just that if you adopt the name of a fictional character you like then it just seems strange that you are butchering their personality and concept by throwing them into a random universe that has nothing to do with them whatsoever and then playing them off as an obedient hero of everything. I doubt anyone really cares but merely just find it to be a really bizarre choice for what's supposed to be your own character, particularly if you follow any part of the game's dialogue and story with even just a mild interest. It's simply one of those pet peeves that people have, nothing more than that I imagine.

That said, I people watch a fair bit too because I often don't know what to do when I log in unless my friend is around, so I have plenty of opportunity to see other players myself when I am bouncing around Ul'dah. Albeit what bothers me... what really, really... REALLY bothers me, is when I spot someone with a similar glamour and/or character to my own. That ****ing drives me insane. In the most recent case, someone had almost the exact same Au Ra as me with only slight colour variations and it bothered me enough to check if they had any presence online, and sure enough, because it's Balmung, they had a Tumblr and I discovered it was one of those flavour-of-the-month players who likes to change their appearance regularly with vastly different hairstyles, colours, makeup and even at one point, had fantasia'd over from a Raen. Sure enough, I had designed my character and glamour before they made the change so that made me feel better - simply because my character was more fresh and I worried that I was the clone in this instance(even if unwittingly).

Yes. I take aesthetics and glamour design very seriously!!11!1

I, honestly, couldn't care less what people want to name their characters. Sure, it's not original, but far be it from me to worry over their fun. It only becomes an issue on Balmung if they try to roleplay as those characters. That is when I silently judge them.

In my experience I've found all the UchihaMadara666x420 to be solid players who knew their jobs well.

Eh, while I don't necessarily love or hate it, I do find it annoying. Then again, I go out of my way to have a lore-friendly name, so yeah.

I haven't watched an anime since interstellar 5555 was cool, but I can't berate someone for putting more thought into their character name than choosing two songs that played back 2 back on their iTunes like I did

I actually give people who managed to get the name a nod of approval from my side of the screen. If they butcher it, I'm a little less impressed.

My names are either a name I happened to like ((My Alt Richard, though I was watching Gilmore Girls the first time I named him darn near a decade ago.)) Or just a string of sylables I've thrown together because they sound good to my ear. ((Richard's last name "Lethain" or both parts of my main's name.))
