Because that's what the thread was about. If this was in-game I would have walked right on by.The point is that Anime (and other media) characters have special meaning to individual people, they resonate with something in that person's experience. So Why does anyone feel a need to critique a character name chosen by another player?
If it's so inconsequential, why are you so insulting about their name?
Insulting others because of their choice of name is what the thread is about? Really?
I just *don't* see that in the original post;
I could have sworn it was more asking people who have used an anime character as inspiration to list their chaacter(s) and source reference, and possibly, by implication, why they chose them. Oh, and asking them to be friends if they share the same server as the OP. Definitely nothing about being judgmental and insulting.Anyone else here named their character after an anime character. My character is from the monogatari series. if your character is named after an anime character and you are on the Diabolos server let's be friends. I'm already friends with Chitoge Kirisaki, Lina Inver, and Kotori Minami
Wow. O.O Who would have thought someone could dislike a made up character so much. If that's your opinion, fine. I really don't understand why people are getting so riled up about a NAME. Lol. I'm an avid lover of all things LOTR and Hobbit, even if they are not original characters from the books. We're all having a respectful discussion here; you're not better than anyone else just because your name follows lore...and honestly to say that my character is cheap and trashy is very rude and hurtful...even if she is made up. So congrats on being the first naming convention elitist jerk on the forums.
When did I say I was better than anyone else?
Sure, it wasn't in the OP but this is general discussion, and people started talking about preferences. These are mine. And I'm allowed to have them.
FTR, because I don't like your character's name doesn't mean anything about YOU. I've never met you and thus I don't have an opinion about you. No need to take everything so personally.
I'm also an avid lover of LOTR, which is precisely why I don't like Tauriel. She doesn't fit and I personally find her insertion distracting.
Also, a different way to look at this is an FYI about what people might think of when they see your (or anyone's name). It's for your knowledge. Heck, if people didn't like my name for whatever reason it's not a stretch to think I might want to know.

Can we go back to the jokey anime name discussion now and leave the personal insults behind, before this thread ends up locked or silently deleted? I can understand why roleplayers prefer lore-friendly names for immersion, of course, but since there is no such thing as an official roleplaying server it's inevitable that other people will be playing for their own, perfectly valid reasons and not be so worried about fitting in. Not everyone roleplays. Not everyone loves a particular anime or book series in the exact same way another person expresses their passion. Not everyone comes from a culture where everyone has uniform names, either (my real first name, middle name and surname are each from different languages, and I hope nobody finds that offensive in the real world because I'm not changing them).
Yep, you're entitled to your thoughts. Doesn't mean you have the right to be rude. Also, it's not unusual for people playing a game like this to become attached to their character. Just remember that the next time you insult someone's character, there's a real person behind them. People should stop being so quick to judge someone based off something so simple as a name; you might be losing out on meeting someone interesting or creating a new friendship. But that's me. No matter what your name is, if you come say hi to me, I'm gonna chat with you![]()

...no one made that kind of thread?
This is a thread about anime names, that's all. The basic question that started it all was "Does your character have an anime name?" and most people ended up answering some form of "No, because I generally dislike it".
That's how discussions are, you are free to stick to whatever you like, but you can't expect everyone to be totally supportive of it and like it too.
If I make a thread asking "Hey, are you all into roleplaying?" I can't expect every answer to be "Yeah, totally, and my character is xyz!", instead I'd probably get a lot of "Nah, roleplaying isn't my thing but if people enjoy it, good for them, I guess?"-answers and maybe even a few "Honestly, it bothers me when they do that in general chat/makes me uncomfortable/etc." type of answers.
No reason to feel it is a personal attack. You put your name out there as an example so I naturally used it to explain what I see wrong with names like these.
And again, I'd never bother anyone about their name ingame. I know a handful of Rinoas, a Noctis, one Uzumaki and one Asuna. They are all great people. Maybe you are as well, after all, I don't know you.
I never talked to them about their names, but that doesn't mean that I don't have an opinion on it. I kind of assumed a thread which is meant to talk about these kinds of names was a place where I could honestly say that I dislike them, but somehow that's already considered an insult..?
Which doesn't mean nobody ever thought it.
Like pretty much everyone in this thread who expressed their dislike for these types of names said, it's basically just a slight annoyance, something you just live with. It would be rude and unnecessary to confront anyone with that. But it doesn't mean that everyone you know doesn't judge your name in some way just because they never said anything.
(again, your name is an example because you brought it up as one. There are many that I consider much, much worse)
Btw, why do I get 2 seperate answers? xD
I'm not under the impression that I was. Honest, perhaps. You disagree with me, that doesn't make me rude.
I never insulted your character. I said that the name makes me think of a character that I found trashy and cheap. I never said your character was trashy and cheap. Nor did I say YOU were. You're reading a lot into what I said.
Never said I wouldn't do this either. You're really putting a lot of words into my mouth, which is way more rude than anything I ever said to you.
I just read what you wrote, nothing more. And I was only simply stating what *I* do, had nothing to do with how you interact with other players. I didn't say anything that you hadn't already wrote. Do you really believe quoting someone and then insulting that name doesn't equate to insulting that character? I don't see how that is not rude. But we can just disagree and the thread can get back on topic. Tbh I was always shy about posting on forums and whatnot and always just enjoyed reading them, and only recently got the courage to start posting. Guess I'm gonna go back to just reading.
P.S. Thanks for sticking up, Kos. <3
Yes. If I'm 100% honest with myself I can see how someone who was very emotionally invested in this video game might make that kind of a leap. But it really doesn't follow, because it's all just a matter of taste. For example, if someone said my character's name was uncreative because I followed naming convention I would shrug and think, "eh, to each his own," and move on with my life.
In response to this, I would like to encourage you to continue to post on the forums, but only if you can handle people disagreeing with you. There is never going to be a time when everyone agrees with everything you say all the time. Some people are going to give constructive criticism. Other people people may even be confrontational. There's no way around that.
Another thought: you might consider not putting forth something as personal to you as your name for an example. People have a tendency to critique examples given. Honestly, if you hadn't put your own name forward I wouldn't have commented on it at all.
