GPU crashing at 75 degrees! (only on FFXIV)

    Hi all,

I apologize if this thread is redundant. I've been searching and searching for a solution to this, and while my problem is tied to well-documented ones (error code 11000002), it seems unique.

I run a Gigabyte r9 290x windforce. My PSU is 750w bronze EVGA, in other words more than enough. My CPU, which isn't relevant here, is a Phenom II X4 965 OC'd to 4.0 Ghz.

In all other games, my gpu will start artifacting and crash at around 85 degrees celsius--the max temp for this particular model of r9 290x.
However, in FFXIV and only FFXIV, when it gets to 75 degrees, it will artifact and then crash, giving me: "a Fatal directx error occurred: 11000002". The DX9 client hasn't crashed yet, but the gpu has artifacted on that as well. Leading me to believe it is a temperature problem, and sure enough, the only thing that causes the crash is when it gets to 75 degrees. My fan profile is extremely aggressive, around 90% when it hits 70 degrees. Currently testing that to see if it will keep the temp from gradually rising. It's worth mentioning that the GPU utilization stays at 99% or 100% all the time.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled every kind of driver multiple times, uninstalled/reinstalled windows, upgraded to windows 10, uninstalled/reinstalled FFXIV. This problem doesn't occur in any other games. I'm not sure if it's hardware or software or FFXIV, and am kind of at a loss in terms of what to try.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

If you can confirm that it is temperature related that's pretty interesting.

There are many that experience that Fatal DX error with R9 AMD GPUs under DX11 and not DX9.

If it is temp related it may not necessarily be the GPU die (since that one is rated safe up to 95C and can go over 100C) but possibly DRAM temp.

hey man, yea I checked out the temps for the VRAM, but they seem to be fine--under 80 degrees.

Is that during a crash? It could be a combination of low GPU usage (thus low fan speed) and high Ram usage.

If you could graph it to catch any spikes that would be ideal.
