    Accessories and Stats

Something I've noticed a lot lately, In duties and while checking people out when running around (I often examine peoples glamours and such), I've noticed one thing... A lot of melee dps wearing a fending ring, or casters wearing healing rings and healers wearing casting rings.

If you're one of these people, let me tell you it doesn't help you. It actually takes away from what you could be doing. Your Main stat (DEX, MIND, STR, INT) is what gives you the most damage or healing potency besides Weapon Damage. Based on stat weights, secondary stats like crit and skill speed weigh in at only a fraction of what the main stat does. Take this Stat weight chart for MNK for example, thanks to Dervy and widely accepted by the community:

    Stat Weights

    WD: 10.714
    STR: 1.000
    DET: 0.139
    CRT: 0.167
    SS: 0.116

See how much more STR weighs vs. even Det or Crit? You would need 7 Det just to equal what 1 point of STR gives, so say an i180 ring gives you 36 STR, you'd need a ring with around 250 DET just to equal that little amount of STR . So that means that wearing a 180 law ring will give you significantly higher damage then that i200 fending ring you're wearing. The same can be said for any case of wearing an accesory that doesnt have your main stat on it.

Obviously the only exception to this is Tanks slotting STR accesories because they have hit Vit Caps for fights.

The point is, you shouldn't wear items just to boost your ilvl or slot fending accessories because you have a hard time surviving something. If you can't survive fights because your ilvl is too low or you can't dodge mechanics, then there are other more beneficial things to work on like learning fights and getting some relevant gear.

They could be running around with a healer ring on a caster for Ilevel's sake, and simply forgot to switch it back or they could have accidently saved their healer's ring that looks exactly the same as their caster ring, on the slot without noticing. xD I went a whole day like that once.

I was testing the idea of wearing my INT 210 accessory with CRIT/DET + Accuracy on my SCH instead of the 190 one I have (with like SS/PIE). I found that I went from 1365 HPS to 1320 HPS (spamming physick only on myself) with a 5% increase in CRIT rate. I am actually still unsure if that would be beneficial, as CRIT adlo OP + accuracy benefit, vs a minimal loss in healing potency.

Pretty sure those DPS are doing it just to hit the ilevel requirement for the duty.

That's like putting pie gear on BRD, it's really a small drop in dps I think if you change out one piece of gear, but the added MP potential adds up to the overall damage if you play Foe for the caster dps. Though I haven't tested this out yet to be for sure.

The thing with PIE is you can add that via attribute points as well, I can't with CRIT Though, I ended up decided to just keep the MND and not swap for accuracy/crit. The difference either way seemed negligible, but it just felt wrong :P

This. Stats are tuned in this game such that they really don't matter too much beyond iLvl and main stat.

Probably so, but if someone can't meet the requirements with their job appropriate gear, it means they aren't geared well enough yet. At least that's why such requirements are set up in the first place. I don't know that every duty's requirements are necessarily set at the most appropriate level, but if your best gear isn't good enough, replacing some of it with stuff that's useless (or nearly useless) to you just makes you even less capable than that point which the devs already considered not good enough to be there. It's taking an already bad build and making it even worse.

If your real iLevel isn't high enough, don't artificially boost it with inappropriate gear. Keep running some lower ilevel content until you can gear up well enough for the next tier.

It would be so much easier if this was always true. Unfortunately it isn't.
