I'd agree a gender locked hat is silly. And, I don't really see why guys can't wear dresses in this game. I only wish if they did do that, that they'd re-tailor the dresses to be more flattering to their bodies (I'm picturing a strapping large rogdelyn dude in a small tight dress :x He might need it fixed a bit...) And maybe remove bra part of the dress, cause well, it's not supporting anything. Maybe make the top like show off his muscles instead... iono I only say this cause in WoW they didn't gender lock dresses and male orcs looked pretty unflattering in them.

Maybe doing such a thing "stylishly" is hard. But don't they lock us into other roles in this game anyway? Black Mages can't dress up in heavy armor and etc? I think it's more than gender roles we are talking about here. I agree more expression would be good though, but the designers can only do so much at once. Since girls can wear suits, I think making dresses for guys would be fine. Hildibrand wore one.

I think that's because in WoW, fashion and transmogrification didn't come until muuuuch later on. You'd literally go for stats rather than looks. As for the orcs...back in the day they weren't smart enough to play any of the casting classes so they shouldn't have been wearing any robes. :P

WoW did have massive differences in how each gender wore certain bits of gear; suit of armour turning into an itty-bitty-plate-tankini for example. Even in WoD they still do the gender differences in robe-like gear (but a lot less extreme):

Personally, I have no opposition to this. Instead of have two separate chest pieces that are gender-locked, you would simply have one item, that changes based on who is wearing it. Takes up less space and gets rid of gender-locking (as you would no longer need separate items). It would however mean that a female would never get the males look or otherwise, unless they changed gender. I'm fine with this, however I can imagine many people wouldn't be.

    Neither option is discriminatory though.

It's not limiting they want, but gender-locking does absolutely add spice. If you think it's just more fantasias, that's fine. But me, the observer in all this, gets to see people in a variety of outfits.

Going left to right, we *need* number 2 and...who am I kidding, lets have them all... especially 2 and 4.

Happy for the gender locking.... i mean you can flip your gender in game like a switch. What is the big deal?

They need more Race Specific Gear!

    Race locking for the win!

Um... not to pick on you here... but there are games out there that take Gender-locking to such an extreme that they actually outright gender-lock specific character classes. Meaning that if you want to play a specific class in one of these games, then you MUST be a specific gender. At least Final Fantasy XIV doesn't go to that extreme (yet). Gender-Locking clothing items isn't all that weird all things considered, and it is certainly less extreme than gender-locking an entire class option.

The next time you want anything at all, the male vanu dance, a female version of male armour, anything. I hope you remember these words.

This looks like it works really. I mean we could get into why dudes don't have to cover their nipples and women do but I don't want any part of that conversation. Let's just go with what I can get away with if I go outside atm...
But yea, something like this looks about like the stylish thing I was talking about. Though, I dunno if that is his color, I mean, a blue beard and a orange dress is so 2010! :P

It may lead to more Fantasias, and from a business for profit mindset, SE might want that. I think though it does lead to uniqueness, because they can design a dress to show off an Elezen's legs, or a jacket to show off a Roe's shoulders, or even some kind of special Lala tribe gear that they wear in the Southern Isles or even some kind of ceremonial attire for a Miqo'te coming of age or something along those lines. They could make it to celebrate the races, some people are very proud of the race they play as; much like the artifact gear shows off what makes each job unique. Plus I fully support fleshing out the lore, especially in a way that we can interact with, like glamour items. If they do make restricted gear I want it to have a purpose, not just for the sake of restriction. However just like with the artifact gear, I believe everyone should be given an equal amount of restricted gear, because at that point it creates a level playing field.
