Sohm Al is actually a volcano. Guess what, real volcanoes have that "weird mist" too if they are somewhat active..
I'd rather see the dev team take it to areas that are completely different from what we have already. While I also wish we got our dark, dense, mossy type of forest back that led you in circles and when fog came out, soon you were completely lost even with a map (), I at least have the area around Urth's Fount, and some other areas in the Shroud still look great and somewhat eerie as soon as the fog comes out:
I'll also have you know that I got attacked by undead soldiers and skeletons when I tried to put flowers on the graves in Central Shroud today..
Enkidoh is right, you just aren't looking hard enough or tend to forget about some areas after you finish leveling and just sit in Idyllshire all day![]()

As nice as the areas are in FF14 - I have to agree that they do leave me wanting.
They all seem very samey - they are all largely open areas, with a few rocks, some trees etc - they are 'safe'.
It would be great to have areas that really stand out.
Not just a little bit of volcano within the dravanian forelands - but a huge cratered area, with sulfur lakes and charred grounds.
Not just a lightly forrested area such as around Gridiania - but a dense, darker forest with tiny narrow paths, mazelike, where you have to push through the leaves and undergrowth. A map where you walk in the canopy of the forest, high above the ground, along pathways bult by a new race of beast tirbe - who make their home high up in the canopy. You could even layer a map like that. Have the thick underbrush map below, then you fly up to the beastmen tree house - I am not talking houses on stilts like the ones with the sylph - actual tree houses with rope pathways ect.
All the maps, as lovely as they are - tend to play it safe and have for the most part have lost potential in doing so.

1.0 Shroud was mazelike and everyone took forever to get anywhere and players complained how, while it might be a nice design idea, it fails on an actual gameplay level.
In ARR, they actually had to add a railing to the tiny ramp leading up to the Sylph house simply because one of the most common complaints they got was that players fell off all the time trying to climb it.
Excuse me, but I think you are vastly overestimating the general Player's ability to navigate their character xD
The dev team played it safe, yes, and I too wish that some areas had a bit more visual oomph, but they played it safe because it was necessary.

Sea, allagan city. LOL ALLAGAAAINNNN?
Also some kinda cool entrance would be neat, possibly connection from La Noscea?
This pic pulled from ff15.

I expect at least an underwater temple if not a whole city for our swimming expansion! :3
And while I really had enough about Allagans already, I can't wait to see Garlean cities one day which I imagine to be awesome and different from our current ones °-°

In before sea aether currents to be able to swim freely.
On the plus side, new sea mounts?
It's not that we aren't looking, not saying the small tiny area's you walk right by and its over.
Like someone said above there is a lava part no we want the whole area to be that, when you zone in its just one big hell fire until you zone out, same with a spooky forest or grave site until you zone out.
Not just you walk by oh cool then its over.
the whole landscape, hell if anyone has played suikoden 4 the whole world was water and the only way around was boats, I even would like to see that happen in a whole area but don't give a cutscene when we travel by boat.
Wouldn't you loved to see a huge land cursed from the calamity, where when you enter from the start all the way to the finish its spooky reeks of death and haunted music and ghostly presence and quest revolving about giving some of them peace and sending them off something like the calm like FFX and yuna, I just want a whole huge zone dedicated to something like that not just walk by a area and then its some sort of new scene or different background just matched all the way through the whole zone until you exit and basically say wow that zone was awesome.
