If you want to have the PC's going around being Big Damn Heroes you have only two real choices: The PC is the 'Chosen One' (actually being chosen by anything is optional) who goes around solving everyones problems and is beloved by all; or the World of Warcraft solution in which NPC's get credit for everything you do and steal all your kills either in cutscences or offscreen. I want you to imagine the storyline, except it wasn't you who felled Titan and Ifrit, it was Minfillia. Saved Limsa from Levithan? Nope, that was Merlwyb. Estenien single handedly felled Nidhogg while you held his cloak. That kind of stuff gets old real fast.

I actually don't mind "chosen one" plots, I just think XIV would be an interesting game to deconstruct one in, given the pretty firm light/dark lines. Opinion time! I'd actually like more focus on the Echo, rather than the "Warrior of Light," and "Blessing" bits.

Part of the plot IS actually discovering the truth behind the Echo. It's just a very subtle sub plot. How many times have Lahabrea and Elidibus spoken of "The True Power of The Echo" like they know what it is and we don't? Elidibus stated if we could use The Echo to its full potential we'd side with him instead of Hydaelyn.

All this time later and we still know next to nothing about it. I think The Anti-Tower may change that in 3.2. As will discovering The Secret of Silver Tear Lake.

Well yeah, of course the Echo is part of the focus, I'd just prefer it be a bit more of one.

Actually, just give more more Elidibus in general. That can't be asking too much, can it? C-can it?

    Not necessarily.

The problem with our reputation is that we are almost never acting alone. The WoL never takes the initiative. Every time we get involved in large scale heroics we didn't get there by ourselves. Someone always asks us to go. Worse yet, most of the people who commission our services are heads of state, grand companies, or well known citizens. Because of this, someone always knows what we're doing, when we're doing it, and when we've succeeded in doing something "heroic." Multiple witnesses are what tend to lead to some notoriety. Hence, our reputation is well spread.

A lack of witnesses has the opposite effect. Consider the Warriors of Darkness. The Scions had no idea who these people were. Why? Because they have been operating on their own agenda. They're not working for the government. They're not being wined and dined with the heads of state at a banquet of some kind. They don't have some stuck up rich kid with delusions of moral superiority pining for their affections. If we had not been there to personally witness them take down Ravana, no one would have had a clue that they even existed.

It is definitely possible for a hero to stay out of the lime light. What the WoL needs is less baggage. Ditch the twins. Take a vacation from the Scions. Tell the heads of state to go F*** themselves (because it's about time someone did), and go find an adventure instead of being told where one is.

Okay, I kindof love the idea of us saving the world for the umpteenth time ((Perhaps in a somewhatfinal way, after solving the Garlemald issue (either murder or peace work here depending on how they want to tell the story) and the Acsian/Zodiark threat)) and literally taking a vacation. Shenanigans ensue.

It's kind of frustrating. Even on the holiday events that are supposed to be relaxing for adventurers, like the summer swim event, we're still doing the work.

Sometimes I feel like those holiday events are really kicking the dog.

Honestly, this bit the fandom seems to have about "The WoL clearly has no control or agency whatsoever in their life we're basically a slave to the crystal" is frankly stupid. The crystal blesses you, sure, but you clearly have more than enough opportunity to walk away from all of this with no punishment, and you are repeatedly asked if you're sure you want to do this at numerous points in the MSQ. The WoL *chooses* to keep helping the Scions, Ishgard, and whoever else their various questing aids at any given time. A point of this was even made in the Void Ark quests where Leofard says he bets you can't resist a good adventure and you nod in affirmation. Now, if you think the WoL should have more dialogue options or more varied or nuanced writing, that's a reasonable opinion but a separate discussion. We also aren't "given a focus" at all. The only time the mothercrystal gives specific instructions is how to banish Ascians, sure...but by that point we wanted to do that anyway because we had become very involved in that situation. What we do has *nothing* in common with FF13 (and thank the twelve, that garbage game needs as few tie-ins as possible).
