proximity chat. ffxiv needs this

EVE Online has it (or did when I played a few years ago). Its terrible, but its there.

That being said, its a waste of game resources for an MMO to have it (which is why it was so bad in EVE).

As does Dungeons and Dragons Online. It was awful.

Voice chat should always be optional, and putting it in-game only leaves it open for people to kick for not using voice chat. Don't pretend it won't happen xD

It happens regardless, but I agree that it should be left outside the game, especially since this is a multi-platform game. Making a chat client that would work (much less work well) on PC and PS3/PS4 isn't a task I'd envy the developers.

WoW has built in party and raid wide voice chat. Or at least I think it works like that. Never used it.

It's an old blog post, but he's pretty conclusive about voice chat.

Voice chat wasn’t enabled in the recent beta. Will it be integrated in the full version of the game?

Naoki Yoshida: We do not plan on offering official support for voice chat. To explain that decision, the idea of talking directly to other players with your own voice and making it a requirement to do so will not necessarily be a good thing for beginners and new players and many will see it as imposing pressure or causing them unnecessary stress.

I am personally a veteran online gamer so I completely understand the importance of voice chat but if we were to make it an officially supported feature then there is a chance that some players would start to demand that others use it just because it is an “official feature”.

Of course, we will not be prohibiting external voice chat via Skype etc, so individual player communities can still sort out their own preferred means of communication!

As someone who uses voice chat several times a week:

No. 100% definitely no. I want to have control over when I voice chat, and have 0 interest in going for it with randoms. I'll stick to 3rd party programs (with no pressure to use in random content) thx.
