More recently, Porter Moogles were added to the game, allowing a player to store large numbers of items from certain events in exchange for Storage Slips, which greatly relieves inventory strain.
Except, all those changes did not occur until the game was many years past its prime. From the beginning, inventory was an issue but still compared to FFXIV, was manageable because we could have alts.

And adding to that, FFXI has a ton of goodies now, but those were not around for the first 5-6 years. This game, FFXIV needs changes while it matters, not when no one is going to be around to care.

Every indication I can find online is that the Armor Depository NPCs were added in 2005. Most people would probably consider FFXI's prime starting at some point in Treasures of Aht Urhgan, which was not released until 2006.

Regardless, my point was that those systems either existed in FFXI before FFXIV released or were added shortly after 1.0's release. They were well-established by the time the 2.0 overhaul occurred, and it's not like inventory strain in MMOs was a new concept even then.
