In large it comes down to game design. if something can be ignored then it gets ignored.

if during a boss fight you can ignore the adds and just punch through, smack the boss and win then people will do it.
if you can completely ignore mechanics because the healers can keep you up then people will.
if you can hit hard enough to completely skip "phases" then people do.
if you can ignore half your skills / buffs and still clear content then people do it.

On the one hand everyone wants everyone to play properly but at the same time they want to take as many short cuts as possible. often see people play "properly" and then get crap for it. ignore the mechanics just zerg the boss!!!!

There's a difference between being efficient (intentionally ignoring newly spawned adds when the boss is at 1% HP left) and being lazy (intentionally ignoring the use of skills that increase your damage/survival/healing output).

DPS get blamed for *everything*. I was in a Lv. 50 roulette (TTD HM) the other day where the healer was mad that our BLM wasn't using Lv. 60 abilities, going on about how bad his/her DPS was despite the fact that we were going at a pretty steady click.

That's where you turn the table and ask "Where is Stone 3?" (or whatever your healer was) :S

It always surprises me when people have time to watch others. How can they focus on their job? I am usually too much busy throwing stones/holy novas, watching tank's hp, keeping track of CDs and avoiding aoes, while keeping the rest of the group alive.

Maybe if I was not dpsing there would some time... but that sounds boring and not effective.

Of course if things die at slow rate I might start questioning the cause, but that must be one seriously bad performance.

You can argue all you want but the simple truth is that everyone is entitled to play how they want. They're paying for their subscription not you. However, if what they're doing is ruining the quality of your subscription then you get the right to complain and they can't do anything about that. That's the way it is and nothing is going to change that.

Some people are good at multitasking.
I for one have more than enough time to check a dps' buffs while casting stone III for the next millenia, I watch tank buffs too, but I guess that's because they're naturally my main focus. The only time I'm not paying attention is in large fights like in VA, where everyone is busy taking 39+ aoes to the face and I'm left with 8 people to heal.

Granted my expectations for people are fairly low, but even then I'd call out not using a key skill of a class. At least try, thats all I really ask for.

While healing, I am watching the party bar, so I see some casts and buffs there. But mainly, it is when I notice the character animations or lack thereof. Now also its when someone is out of range a lot.

And as you said the big alarm is when stuff is dying really slow, as in I've done my holy-assiez rotation, with a lot of holy, shroud, gone back to healing, now my mp is low, and the tank has used all their CD, and there are still 4+ mobs up with at least 1/4 health and everyone is almost ilvl 210...

It happens more than I want to believe...

Low dps in dungeons normally doesn't bother me, because I have tunnel vision going, and too focus on either my own rotation or healing and dpsing at the same time. But when it comes to primal fights you best bring your A game, and most of the time I'm praying for a parser to be in the group to weed those people out. Bad tanks on the other hand (the ones that pull 1 or 2 people at a time even though a BLM and Smn are in the group) make me want to leave.

Quick glances at the party UI is all you need really and some knowledge of the job. Most jobs have some sort of class mechanic that is a upkeep/passive buff like Heavy Thrust, Huton, Darkside, Wanderer's Minuet, Gauss Barrel, Enochian, Blood of the Dragon, Greased Lightning, Dreadwyrm. Obviously they might not be on all the time but if you don't see them at all throughout the whole run... You can even see if tanks are using defensive cooldowns when they are taking heavy damage. For BLMs, you can even piece together a rotation by looking at the cast bars if you wanted. The party UI gives a lot of info by itself.
