Targeting can be troublesome, but it's essential in a game like this. I think the most meaningful modification they could make is your initial target after having no target selected, be the target infront of you. Also, easier switching between All/Enemy targeting would be nice.

Funny, then, that when the Buffalo was literally the only thing visible on my screen, I still couldn't click-target him. "BAM!" indeed. . .

That damn NM hax on so many levels, targeting is the least of our concerns. 1k AoE damage with knockback regular attacks? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-

That is exactly how it is at the moment. I do it all the time. I hit enter and the closest target in front of me is selected (I'm actually lying, I hit 0 on my num pad, but you catch my drift).

Personal AoEs are often not ideal. One of the main advantages spellcasters and archers have is that they don't have to stand next to something to use their attacks, and that would remove that advantage for all AoE abilities.

Fair warning, this post contains an idea that is in use in World of Warcraft.

In WoW most area attacks just give you a big old circle where you can click the ground and then the spell casts right there. You see visually exactly where things will be when you cast the spell, and can try and include or exclude whatever targets you wish. I think that's pretty much the ideal targeting system, and along with actually telling us when we're in range for attacks are about the two biggest things I want playing a ranged class/job.

Another game series that uses targeting circles, but isn't an MMO, is "Tales of." If you cast an area spell and don't move, it casts on the current target, and you can use the directional buttons to select that target. If you instead move the stick, you get the big targeting circle you can try to get more targets in. Using the analog stick for this seems like a viable solution for controller players to me.

Didn't SE use something like this in Crystal Chronicles? Depending on the level of spell you were casting, the targeting circle got bigger until the -ja tier affected the whole screen?

aside from all the other reasons why this is a bad idea, not only is arrow helix AoE, it is donut aoe, like iron tempest, meaning that if you are positioned wrong, you WILL miss. In addition, most mobs now are spaced closely enough that hitting or even linking can happen easily; and if you are soloing anything at equal level or slightly higher, you. will. die. This is why we have ws that are single target/linear aoe. so that we don't fight more things that we can handle.

It's not about the specific shape of Arrow Helix that I was talking about. I was talking about it's convenience with respect to targeting, considering the fact that you don't actually have to target anything in order to use it.

Should probably have said Aura Pulse instead, then.
