World Transfer Help/Advice?

After quite some significant time playing, I'd like to transfer my character to another server for personal reasons. However, I've noted that the service appears to be more punishing to more long term users.

The 1 million gil limit is understandable regarding in-game economy, yet I have a lot more than 1 million gil - nearly double that. Should I purchase items of high value in order to make use of my gil rather than waste it? If anyone knows of an item I can resell to regain my lost gil, that would be incredibly helpful.

I'd also like some help regarding server population on the Chaos data centre - I've had my eye on Phoenix and Cerberus. If anyone can provide a rough population estimate, I'd be very grateful as I'd rather transfer my character to a less crowded server.

Then again, I'm currently in Zodiark so I'm sure wherever I go it'll be crowded. (Laughs) Thanks for the help in advance!

Best advice I can give is to make an alt on that server and see which items sell most consistently, buy those items and bring them over. Some players will buy rare minions, but imo that's more of a gamble.

yep make an alt on the server your interested in going and review your worlds market and that worlds and naturally by cheap items current world that sell far more one the world you want to move to.

So your closer to the servers in Germany? chaos data center?

Depending on location I would sample the ping and pick any world located on lowest ping server. I'm a aussie for example so had to pick a JP world.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm on an entry level subscription account as I'm happy focusing on my one and only main character. Your advice is great and I would have taken it up, except I'm unable to make additional characters as a result of my subscription. I could change it but due to work and other commitments, I'm loathe to pay extra when I can't always guarantee I'll have the time to play.

I'm British so the Chaos centre seems the best place for me to be, I never really thought about trying other centres. Do you not have trouble finding English speakers on the JP server, Valkyrie?

I guess I need someone from Phoenix or Cerberus to find the best selling items. I hope someone from there pops into this thread!

Minions sound like a good idea though I'm unsure which ones would make the best profits. It's certainly looking like I'll have to cut my losses but again due to personal reasons I'd rather get away from the server I'm currently in. Thanks for your help so far!

You could also consider buying allagan pieces and clear demimateria as they have a solid set value if you can stockpile enough. Not to mention the items being sold on the board for below vendor cost.

No, this is a terrible idea that is in no way practical in the game.

I transferred with the Chaos move and had 15 mil gil at the time. I bought a variety of things (minions, thav crafting mats, thav onions, shards, materia). From my experience, I'd say shards/crystals/clusters were the best - very high demand, so stock is always moving, and if you sell in small amounts (100~300 instead of 1000+), you can get people to buy them at a slightly higher price. The prices on the other things fluctuated a lot due to the lower demand. It took maybe a month for me to sell the non-shards off.

EDIT: to pull up numbers I compiled before:

Just to help kill some spread of misinformation.. in order to transfer even 1 million gil, you would need 2,000 silver coins, 400 gold coins, or 100 platinum coins. As of right now, on Cactaur:

Allagan Silver Piece (sells for 500): 13 sellers, only 5 at vendor rate, 57 at 800 gil, 71 at 900, 106 at 1000, 1 at 1 million, 2 at 99,999,999
Allagan Gold Piece (sells for 2500): 1 at 4000, 10 at 5000
Allagan Platinum Piece (sells for 10000): 2 at 500k, 1 at 1 million, 2 at 4 million

Much better alternatives: look for popular crafting mats, materia, and/or shards+crystals+clusters. From my own transfer, I quickly realized it was much better to go for slightly lower value things that sell often. I still have some mats that haven't sold, and the price keeps dropping

That's definitely my next port of call, I'll see if I can ask the players directly on those servers for advice. Thanks for pointing me over there, I'm still new to the Forum so embarrassingly it's something I missed. Also, don't worry about the misinformation, ExKage, someone beat me to correcting you! I didn't realise they reduced the cost. Makes my virtual life a lot harder to transfer.

Thank you so much, Reinha, for the extensive server information. It certainly gives me a better idea of where to go. Not to mention it's interesting to look at. I'm researching as much as possible before I make my transfer application. It's not something I plan on doing again so I'm trying to get it right first time.

I looked up the Allagan pieces you suggested Stormrider, but they're selling for ridiculous prices and are no where near a fair trade. On Zodiark I saw Platinum pieces selling for 35k each! Thanks for bringing clarity to the information I've been given Raela, I'll definitely take up your advice regarding Materia and clusters. If anything I need to meld Materia into my Sphere Scroll anyway, so I suppose buying Materia won't put my gil to waste.

I'll be honest and say I'm unsure about crafting mats. I've only ever really dabbled in weaving and being a botanist. An explanation would be appreciated. Again, thanks so much for all the great responses. It's more than I expected! I'll see about directing players from Phoenix and Cerberus here for more advice before I make the move and I'm still all ears for any further tips. For now, I'll be stockpiling crystals and Materia. OH, if you have only 2mil? You can place up to 500k 100k on your two retainers.
