Well, I will say. FFXIV has a pretty big sale going on. At the moment, I believe it's buy HW and get ARR free? Least I think that's what I saw recently. Kinda makes me sad I bought both separately D:

But anywho, I think we got a bit of an influx of newer players. With that, older players rejoining to help and not remembering what the heck is what. Now, me personally, I farmed the ever living hell out of CM and Prae when I was leveling up my main (wanted ironworks gear and was doing the old relic weapon quests with the books). So I could probably do both in my sleep at this point. Dragging the mobs to the cannons is indeed the correct way. But usually, I just see that the entire group has followed me over... so I just go and switch off the searchlights with a dps or healer asap and then we usually just clear out the rest. It's not really that bad. cannons would indeed be faster... but what can ya do. I don't feel like dealing with the shitshow that would be dragging the mobs back with no DPS ready at the cannons (and of course wailing away at the mobs while I'm moving them).

If you have a BRD, MCH, BLM, or SMN in your group, you can just LB2 and erase all the trash nearly instantly at that point. Assuming, of course, one of your melee DPS didn't waste LB on Rubricatus...
