I'm all for more varied weapon skins. Saying a class has 'identity' from its weapon is pretty absurd. A warrior would still be a warrior if you gave them a size appropriate polearm or warhammer. The -animations- give the classes identity, and most of the animations on some classes can easily fit multiple weapons, since they're impractical fighting styles anyways.

Except you're actually falling into the trap of not understanding the whole concept of the Armoury System that underlies FFXIV's battle system. This is not FFXI's Job System where you have a Job and multiple types of weapons that can be equipped, usually with Jobs having varying degrees of proficiency in them. Here in FFXIV, the class/Job is the weapon - that's what the system has been about ever since day one, and thus Jobs build on that. Want to use a lance? You're a LNC/DRG. Want to use a gun? Equip MCH. Want to use a sword? That's GLA/PLD, etc etc. This is how it's been with FFXIV since the very beginning in 1.0, and how FFXIV will always be.

And before you pass judgement, players were actually asked whether to scrap the Armoury System in favour of FFXI's style Job system, or keep the Armoury System and just have Jobs piggyback on the existing classes. Players decided on the later. So for better or worse, the Armoury System and it's single weapon type per class/Job is here to stay I'm afraid.

You're not really...understanding what varied skins mean.

It means a sword is a sword, but it'll look like a mace. Or an axe. Or another suitable one-handed weapon. It doesn't change Paladin to 'Not-paladin'. It's literally a weapon skin. That's it.

A lancer won't use a musket, but they could use a staff. A Machinist won't be using a bow as it's one of those classes where the animations can't line up with anything but a musket. Same with bard.

Warrior? You throw a warhammer skin on that baby and it doesn't change a damn thing. (Cough cough titan axe).

-I'm- not saying give them multiple weapon types. I'm saying you can give more varied weapon -skins-, which accomplishes the same deal (letting a paladin use a mace, for example) without changing the class at -all-. By your logic, we might as well scrap the glamour system because 'Paladins wear plate, not bikinis.'

And in my opinion a tank should wear plate, scale or chain mail, but that is offtopic.^^

I would prefer a Berserk job for the Warhammer weapon skin, or a Necromancer or Void Witcher job for the scyth weapon skin, a real Knight job or Mercenery job for the mace skin. And please no single handed weapons, it is good they died for the mages.

Without a spear, a Lancer is not a Lancer anymore
Without a bow, an Archer is not an Archer anymore
Without a Sword, a Gladiator is not a Gladiator anymore (Since Gladiator litteraly means "Swordsman")

For the others...yes, the weapons is less iconic.

Remember, apart from DRK, AST or MCH, you're still gaining class XP.
