Trouble setting a default graphics card to run FFXIV

I'm using a laptop with a windows os.

The only way I can run FFXIV with my nvidia graphics card is by right clicking the shortcut >> clicking run with graphics processor >> high performance graphics (my nvidia card). If I click "change default graphics processor", go into the whole nvidia menu, click on FFXIV, change the graphics processor to my nvidia card and hit apply, whenever I open my game normally it still uses the onboard graphics and the nvidia card is not even detected.

If I add all the FFXIV .exe's into the nvidia settings menu and switch all of them to nvidia, it is still undetected when I run my game. Even when trying to run the game through steam, its always onboard graphics. I even tried changing the global settings to my nvidia card, and same thing happens.

I tried disabling my onboard graphics but my screen just went black and I had to restart my pc.

Anyone know what's going on? Im mainly doing this because I want to use the steam interface with the non-steam version of FFXIV.

NVidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings ->

Under "Preferred Graphics Processor" Select "High Performance NVidia"

Apply the changes and that should be it.

See, that's the problem, When I change anything in the Nvidia control panel nothing sticks. I just did it right now, went to nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings, and under the global tab, changed preferred graphics processor to high performance nvidia, and hit apply.. Load up ff14 and its still using onboard graphics. I also reopened the nvidia control panel and my selection is set back to "auto select". I'ts nuts.

Edit: wait i just updated my driver and then this worked. seems that was the problem the whole time.
