How do I meld and should I?

    Hello,

I finally got myself a set of 150 HQ serpent skin gear and I was wondering how I properly meld it? I don't know anything about melding materia since I've only done it once. And that didn't go well because one of the materia turned red. Can someone please explain how to properly do it, what materia I should use, and if I should do it now that 3.2 is coming close?

I want to be able to craft my own relic materials to save some money. Also, for gathering should I meld those as well? I know this is the wrong forum but I thought since it was the same topic I should just try asking in the same post.

    Thank you!

Gear has stat caps, which is likely why you saw it "turn red". For example, if you're trying to meld Dexterity Materia to a piece of gear with a primary stat of Dexterity, then it has probably already reached its cap. Your materia will add nothing if it's already capped.

Check out this guide. Scroll to the bottom where it says Minimum Baseline. I'm currently done with the guaranteed slots and just need to do the overmelds and I can already do relic items with about 84%.

Guides are nice, but it really depends upon your resources. Use the guides and any other informational sources you need to determine the stat caps. Then meld to meet them, if possible. If not possible, start with CP and get that added to the equipment then go with craftsmanship or control. Craftsmanship is more important initially, until you reach the minimum to make whatever you want to make. After that, Control is arguably the more important of the two.

Thank you guys for the advice.

I briefly read through the links and will be going more in depth with them when I get home. I have the 150 set right now, if I meld those that should be good enough for the 1* HQ right? I haven't even begun any red scrip farming. Is it worth doing right now given the patch is coming up?

Getting Red Scrips can only help.

If you meld that i150 and Hallowed Chestnut accessory set well enough, you can do 2 star crafting, not just 1 star.

I prefer this tool to that guide, but find both helpful: http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/

Also, check prices for materia. I know +control IV are the most expensive on my server, so meld the most expensive first while they are 100% chance.

Sorry to disappoint you, but on my server Tier IV crafting materia goes for 150K+ a pop.
    Overmelding chances are L O W (35% -> 16% -> 11% -> 8%) depending on slot.

You will dump MILLIONS of gil into the greedy maw of merciless RNG to get your gear melded.

If all you want is the relic mats, then do NOT overmeld (let alone pentameld for stat caps Oo) crafter gear.
BUY the relic crap off the MB and rest assured that you get guaranteed value for your gil.

Also Relic crafts are SPECIALIST recipes. You CANNOT craft them all since you are limited to 3 specialist stones. You will have to buy most of them anyway unless you dump red scripts in order to rotate your specialists (not recommended).

As for gathering: Get HQ chimaera gear and red script MH. You can get to where you need to be for folklore items with some very gentle overmelds (or farm more red script gear).

Farm stuff, sell stuff, buy your relic items.
Easiest and most efficient way there is.

Forgive me if I'm resurrecting a dead thread, but I have a big question. Can you ask for someone else to do forbidden melding on your gear, or is forbidden melding something that you have to do by yourself?

I'm quite honestly new to pentamelds because I never had the money (or motivation) to do it before, but now that I'm aiming to try progression content I'd like to have some nice pentamelded accs. Bad thing is my Goldsmith isn't high enough level yet, so I tried having a friend meld materia onto my jewelry. I couldn't select any materia after the first one, though , so now I'm wondering if it's impossible to pentameld by Requesting Meld.
