    System Crashes

While playing I keep experiencing random system crashes. The screen will turn black, sound will continue playing but display never returns. The power has to be hard reset and the computer restarted. This seems to happen mostly in dungeons. I attempted to run Saint Mocianne earlier and experienced this issue almost 10 times.

For some history with the problem, it began April of last year when I purchased a new GTX 980, prior to that I had a GTX 680 with no issues. At first I thought it may be the card and had it replaced only to continue to experience the black screens. While playing more games it became clear very quickly that this problem ONLY occurs when running Final Fantasy, no other programs or games experience any issues.

I have tried uninstalling drivers/reinstalling etc. No new versions of drivers ever to seem to fix the issue. I am currently running the highest version of GeForce drivers, 361.43.

If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. I can post any additional information if requested. The game is becoming totally unplayable with strings of constant crashing.

Do you have a quality power supply? The GTX 980 and 680 are very similar power usage but it could be pushing the rest of your system harder.

Try playing with a capped frame rate to see what happens.

PSU is 1000W so should be more than sufficient. I will try the capped FPS.

How old is the PSU? I didn't really think about this until I had a similar problem, but they do go bad overtime. I had a 1200W one (never used anywhere near that much) and it was 5 and a half years old and the computer would randomly black/blue/power off (problems got worse/more frequent over time).

Eventually I replaced the power supply, problems went away :S Not easy to test unless you have another one, but just wanted to say don't rule it out yet.

Any luck on sorting out what this issue is yet?

I went to limit the FPS this afternoon and found that is already set to be limited at 60. Is there anything in particular you would suggest trying?

I checked and the PSU was purchased in April 2012. So I could see that as being a possibility it just seems odd all the other games I play cause no issue.

I had something like this happen on an old build few years back. Screen blanks, sounds keep going or corrupts. The culprit was a faulty ram stick.

You could lower the graphics to standard while capped at 60 FPS.
What brand of power supply is it?
How are you connecting the GPU to the Monitor? DP, HDMI, DVI?

I had issues using a Displayport Cable doing something similar but it was on any game.

    Edited:

Also are you running everything at the default settings in NVidia Control Center? Some funky stuff can happen if you are forcing vSync while limiting the game to 60FPS from within the game.

I would recommend to restore the defaults and then under this option

Nvidia control panel > Adjust image settings with a preview

then set this -> Let the 3D application decide

instead of this -> Use the advanced 3D image settings

It is a Cooler Master PSU. The monitor that runs FF is on display, the rest are HDMI. I checked the Control Center and Let the 3D application decide is how it was already set.

Is it just the monitor that is on Displayport that is going blank?

Maybe google 980 displayport issues to see if it similar to what you are seeing. But I think that would effect everything.
