According to the way the game was created, you are doing it wrong. In the JP culture and the development team's mindset, PF is for learning the instance. DF is business only clearing. They did not intend the DF to be a learning instance, but a clearing instance for serious gameplay and intended the PF to be the place to advertise what you want to learn etc.

If you truly want practice, bite the bullet and create a PF. It's very easy and you might be surprised with what you get.
