However, in order to continue these services for our customers who have bought this game and for our customers who continue to play this game, even if we didn't factor in development costs, there are also server maintenance costs, 24-hour GM support costs and many others that require consideration, so we need funding in order to continue operating.
This is the part that everyone really needs to pay attention to. It doesn't matter which side of the Pay-Debate you are on.

To paraphrase, "...In order to keep the servers open and operating we need to renew subscription fees."

Summation: $$$ = Servers stay up.

No $$$ = No Servers...or rather fewer servers. That will be up to the accounting department.

Hence the "pitch" from Yoshi P: (paraphrased)

..."We want to allow those of you who enjoy the game as it is now to experience the changes in store for Eorzea. We have special events and storylines planned that can only be experienced before v2.0 goes live. We hope you will choose to stay with us through these exciting (and challenging) times and as always we value and rely on your continued feedback..."

It is certainly possible (and plausible to boot) that if they don't get enough subs, they may just shut down till 2013.

However, I think they will do all they can to avoid that.
