    Job quests?

    Hello,

I'm a new player here and I was just browsing through the forums then I saw something about job quests.

Is there a job advancement you have to do in order to learn new skills/etc? When do you do these job quests? I'm level 20 lancer btw.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Eorzea!

Yes, your Job is pretty much an upgrade on your basic class that adds new abilities and spells and buffing their base stat by a significant amount, while at the same time restricting what abilities you can equip from other classes considerably. The Job takes the form of a 'Soul Crystal' which is a piece of equipment that you equip in the relevant slot on the Character screen (in the bottom right corner). Each class traditionally only has one Job they upgrade to and there is no Job swapping one Job crystal to a different class - each Job is connected to one particular class (for instance, your current class of Lancer upgrades to the Dragoon Job), with the exception of Arcanist which has two possible Jobs (Summoner and Scholar - only one can be equipped at any one time).

Also the three new Jobs added with the expansion pack do not have base classes. You unlock a Job by attaining level 30 in the base class and level 15 in a specific secondary class, as well as having completed all the class quests given by that class's Guild - after completing the final one you will be directed to a specific npc who will give you the quest to unlock that Job, and whom from then on will have a quest available every 5 levels that will grant you a new Job ability, and later, the 'Artifact Armour' (AF) for that Job. A Job also cannot cross class another Job's abilities (so, for instance, you can't set Black Mage's Job abilities on White Mage). A final requirement added in a patch is that you are required to have completed the level 23 main scenario quest 'Sylph Management'. These are the Jobs and their required classes:

Dragoon (DRG): Requires level 30 Lancer (LNC) and level 15 Marauder (MRD) - can only use MRD and PGL cross class abilities
Paladin (PLD): requires level 30 Gladiator (GLA) and level 15 Conjurer (CNJ) - can only use CNJ and MRD cross class abilities
Warrior (WAR): requires level 30 Marauder (MRD) and level 15 Gladiator (GLA) - can only use GLA and PGL cross class abilities
Monk (MNK): requires level 30 Pugilist (PGL) and level 15 Lancer (LNC) - can only use LNC and MRD cross class abilities
Bard (BRD) requires level 30 Archer (ARC) and level 15 Pugilist (PGL) - can only use PGL and LNC cross class abilities
Ninja (NIN): requires level 30 Rogue (ROG) and level 15 Pugilist (PGL) - can only use PGL and LNC cross class abilities
White Mage (WHM): requires level 30 Conjurer (CNJ) and level 15 Arcanist (ACN) - can only use ACN and THM cross class abilities
Black Mage (BLM): requires level 30 Thaumaturge (THM) and level 15 Archer (ARC) - can only use ARC and ACN cross class abilities
Summoner (SMN): requires level 30 Arcanist (ACN) and level 15 Thaumaturge (THM) - can only use THM and ARC cross class abilities
Scholar (SCH): requires level 30 Arcanist (ACN) and level 15 Conjurer (CNJ) - can only use CNJ and THM cross class abilities

The three new Jobs available with Heavensward are Dark Knight (DRK), Astrologian (AST) and Machinist (MCH), and these do not have a base class (the Soul Crystal equips automatically if you equip the Job's weapon) and start at level 30 not 1. Finally, only Disciples of War and Magic (melee and caster classes) have Jobs - Disciples of the Hand and Land have something different called 'Specializations' which I won't go into here.

Hopefully this has not been too confusing for you.

It's all a bit messy but the basic way to look at it is to just follow the story quest and your class quests every 5 levels. Once you hit level 30 you will be made aware of your job quest via your class guild through a quest. It will display what classes are required. After that it's a simple matter of getting the secondary class to level 15 and returning to your guild master to begin the new questline in which you unlock your job. This applies to all combat classes but not to gathering or crafting professions.

I discuss this in a guide that may help you out. Happy playing and I hope you find this useful!

For the secondary class do I just have to go to the certain guild master to obtain that secondary class?

Yes, you are correct. As long as you have unlocked the airship to travel to the three city-states you can unlock any class aside from DRK, AST and MCH. (Need to reach HW for those.)

Edit: If you're going for DRG, then you need to unlock MRD from Limsa Lominsa Upper, (x11, y6) It's easy to see the classes on the maps because of the icons. Good luck!
