A lack of subscribers isn't going to kill this game. Especially when they already went over a full year without anything more than donations for the quake.

The only thing that could kill the game at this point would be if Square itself went under. It can't be a sinking ship unless the ship can sink. All this talk of doom and gloom can't really go anywhere sense the game could have no subscribers and it will still develop into 2.0. Square has invested far too much to give up on it now.

    1,000.
    pretty much.
first off, SE does not need our money, especially for only 1 years worth from such a small community, this is obvious. so i wonder why theyre charging at all, especially when theyre basically admitting that the current game is not a representation of the future game.

second, SE said the reason why other MMOs go down is because they loose investors. SE said FFXIV has no real investors and is dependant solely on SE funding. SE is worth more money than they need.

third, they also said the past few years are marginally worse than any previous years, year after year. they said it is due to an over saturation of bad game development, over saturation of poor titles and bad management which has lead them to make some drastic changes within the company itself to offset any more massive losses.
companies normally have this mentality when going under actually does become a reality.
even though they hold some massive titles such as Kingdom hearts and FF, they are only a few in a slew of other western titles that have more players, garner more noteriety and make more money. this means SE is not invincible and they definitely know this.

Even if only one in 3 people subscribe, they are still making more money than they are now. It doesn't really matter how many people quit or how many pay. They fully understand a lot of people disagree because SE isn't filled with naive kids like these forums are.

They will start charging, make a little bit of money, premiere the reboot v2.0 trailer at E3, announce PS3 release, and everyone watching E3 will see it and think, "hey, this looks really cool, maybe I should check it out!" because they are starting a second free trial with the launch of 2.0 for all the people that choose not to pay to play between now and then.

I don't see why people are throwing fits over it, if you don't want to pay then you clearly don't really like the game that much. Or are you voicing your opinion because you feel like you'll have to pay? I don't understand. If you don't like the game enough to pay 50 cents per day, then don't. Check the game out again after E3.

I checked it a moment ago and it was at 600+ will pay and 200+ will not pay so it is basically sitting at a 1 out of 3 players will not continue to pay as of the writing of this article.

The results are misleading. This forum is heavily skewed towards people who are fervent players of the game. My guess is many people who still log on and play occasionally or even frequently do not post here. Thus, I really see this as 1 out of 3 players that still care will not pay.

The results do not account for the vast number of people who still log on but do not care enough to post. They also do not account for the vast number of people who quit long ago, and now will have no incentive to return (except for perhaps a very short time periodically to see any progress)

In other words, the forums put forward the voice of the very vocal minority, and do not reflect the majority of players.

    Consider the following:

    1. The very small current player base, which is propped up by free service
    2. The forth coming premiere triple A titles
    3. The road map that clues potential new subs into the fact that this game is essentially not going to massively change until 2013

These factors all lead me to believe that those choosing to subscribe through out 2012 will be very alone in the game.

I wish the game success, but I see this move as another in a long series of SE blunders. I understand they would like to start seeing a revenue stream from the game and do not wish to provide free services for another entire year, however, I can hardly fathom how saying the current title is 50% complete, stating that they would not charge until the game was "ready", and then announcing they were going to charge in December 2011, while putting out a road map to "readiness" showing 2013, is staying true to the course.

There have been many comments about the cost vs. people's budgets. I agree with most that the monthly service fee is not the issue, it is the principal behind it that is the issue. SE has exhausted all their personal currency with me, and these recent announcements just reiterate how that personal currency has been squandered.

Another user commented that the commercials for needy 3rd world children could not cause him/her to donate, so they certainly were not going to fund ongoing development of a game for a multi-national corporation.

I could not agree more. The company has other revenue streams, other IPs, and this is merely a money grab.

Ultimately, you can take the "those that won't pay" from the other forum post and multiply it by 10x. You can also take the "those that will pay" and subtract at least a third, because something will come up, a new title will come out, any number of circumstances will occur that change their mind.

This is now officially a sinking ship, until v2.0 is released.

I'll check it out when that happens, until then, I bid you farewell, if for no other reason then I do not anticipate there being many people left to play with after December, making the relative cost vs. benefit untenable.
Right, lets try to find every nook and cranny to bring down FFXIV and try to get even more subs to quit.

    Honeybadger doesn't give a f***.

Yep, EVERYONE will be watching E3 and will 9 times out of 10 watch it and see the New FFXIV and how its Dramatically Changing! Thats why its not really a loss to them weather or not they Turn on the Sub switch or not, because either way they will be making some money rather than no money.

I think the bigger question is will it make it to jan 2013 for relaunch with all these games coming out 1st-2nd qtr of 2012.

Making the game pay in its current state in in dec when sw:tor is coming out on dec 20th 2011, how many subs is sw:tor gonna steal, how many subs is D3 gonna steal then we get into GW2 sooner or later then the next WoW expansion come summer time.

Can FFXIV survive the competition on the road to 2.0, all it takes is for one of these games to steal subs for a month or two to put SE in a real trouble.

MMO musical chairs with all these upcomming titles is about to start.

If they were to steal any subs, they would do so weather FFXIV is Free or not: That's a fact.

So whats the difference if they turn it on or not? People will still leave if they want to leave for other games if they want to. This is honestly test the Loyalty of the FFXIV playerbase.

I know I'm staying regardless of what MMO comes out.

Who cares? SE gets NOTHING from us right now. So they have nothing to lose. They lose a bunch of people playing the game because it's free and most likely have no intention of EVER playing even when it cost something. Most people that quit now will come back in 2.0. SE loses X amount of worthless player base but gains X amount of money to help funding, Ect, Ect, Ect. If I was SE i'd choose the latter.
