I agree that SE will release 2.0 regardless of how many or few subscriptions XIV has. To me it seems like they have gotten to the point where they are being obvious about the fact that they do not currently care about keeping/getting a player base, and so they figure they may as well get what small amount of money they can from subscription fees as it is still better than nothing.
I don't necessarily think this is a bad decision from their POV. But I imagine that the number of players will shrink drastically, and the server populations are already on the small side. So I feel bad for the people that really love the game and want to keep playing, but that will have to deal with a teeny tiny population that gets very little "new blood".
Regarding the idea that people will come back for 2.0, I think it is the kind of thing that is tricky for a person to decide so far ahead -- maybe you will be happily playing another MMO that you don't want to leave, or maybe not.
If you actually read the conditions under which Yoshida would be willing to charge for the game, based on what he said in the past...
...we're exactly at that point right now. At no point did he say subscriptions would start when the game was "complete" or "ready" or whatever.
Stop putting words into the developers' mouths.
Also, if 200 of 800 people said they'd stop playing, that's 1 in 4, not 1 in 3.
Cheers!

December 2011 is the end...........
.........of the beginning?

Related to the subject, people already said it, but the game, as of 1.20, which seems like pay to play is being aligned with, will most definitely make the game worthy enough to pay for.
And besides the point, if you look at it from a business aspect, Square Enix obviously plans to do a full revival of the game come 2.0. When you look at it this way, having 16,000 (as a random number example) play the game for free, versus 12,000 people paying for the game, the decision becomes obvious. They're more worried about who is going to play FFXIV on its second release... not so much who is playing now.
That said, I'm totally fine with that. I enjoy the game now, so they're getting my $12.95 a month.

I've been away for a bit. I just read through 1.19 and 1.19a notes. I even took notes, thinking I would play a while, but then I got to more changes that just flat ticked me off. They just make zero sense. Again, another thing I really loved about the game, being able to heal health and mp while moving, was removed. Why? What possible reason? I think that was something everyone really liked about the game. Why, other than pure black heartedness, change THAT? Why literally change EVERY fun, new, cool thing about this game?
CON, I'm sorry, CNJ was gimped even more with all 6 ancient magic spells put on a single timer (forcing us even MORE into the healer vs nuker mode of play of course) and recast on Victimize was set from 10 to SIXTY seconds and made PGL exclusive. They have strayed so much from the rotating armory system that originally made this game so fun...maybe it's just time for me to give up on MMO's period.
Then there's the whole WoW effect thing. Looking at their future artwork, while I'm happy they are (again, if it's to be believed THIS time) promising male miqo'te, which would be cool, so much of the rest of the new graphics look like recycled WoW, down to the armor and mounts, that I know it's just a matter of time until we're calling our characters toons. I HATE WoW! If I wanted to play that I would be playing it, but it appears that is where they want to go--dungeons, raids, insipid question marks above NPC heads, endless quests, and now mounts and huge-shouldered gear (you know, the bigger your shoulders the cooler you are!) and mega-weapons. Ugh... This is not improvement. This is mockery...of US!
And it's sad.
I think the happy people are those who are blind followers of whatever they follow, be it their religion, their team or their game, and they are not fond of the rest of us who think a little deeper than that. I swam up hill against that thinking a LOT in the Army too. "Just follow orders."
Anyway, ZAM's results are more realistic at 50/50. I think SE will be lucky to keep that many for half the time. The changes are too drastic with no reward, and as captainpicard said, this is now a sinking ship. Unless those new jobs (which are the core of what will have to save this game) really take hold and create sweeping changes this ship is going to continue to have a very decided list in favor of DD, and it's never going to recover.
Very sad. It really was beautiful and visionary.... at the beginning.
Now it's just another WoW clone with all that was unique to FF tossed aside in favor of not being what the original team wanted. Imagine if the orignal team had been given all this time and money to work with....what a magnificent game we would have then!
I hope they make it somewhere. They were artists and true to the Final Fantasy name. At least what they created was unique and delivered as promised. My early months of playing this game were the most fun I've ever had playing an MMO.
Things are not always what they seem. When in doubt, ask.
