This. In addition, changes should be swift with no restrictions. The solution seems pretty straightforward to me.
Since 2.0 is essentially a relaunch of the game with new races, it's only fair to offer players the option for a one time free race change.
After that, charge $10 for any further race changes to prevent abuse.
I really hope the word "immersion" does not pop up in this thread.

I'm all for the chance to remake our characters and change name as well... Some names just don't suit a character...

will the female char become more sexy ? :x
at least I want new hairstyle

Honestly I think the above is the best option. I chose Male Midland Hyur because I didn't want to go with a female character. If Yoshida's that hung up about such drastic changes, limiting the race & gender changes to the new options would be fine I think.I agree with Yoshi about changing race "overnight" seems a bit odd. However, I think their should be a balance in being able to change races and being able to change only features/gender:
1. Changing Races: This option is only available if you want to change to one of the new races (Female Roe, Male Miqo'te). This should be a choice based on the following example. Imagine a player creating his new character, and wanted to play a Miqo'te. However, he/she did not want to play a female character for what ever reason, and decided to choose a race instead with a male option, e.g. Male Elezen. However, now that the game supports a Male Miqo'te, I believe it would be fair to give that player another chance.
2. Changing Gender/Features: This option should be available for everyone. Some people, including Yoshi, might think changing gender overnight may be extreme, though. However, if they are adding new facial, hair and other features to all the races, I know a lot of people might like the new options better. I believe this is a fair choice for everyone.

All for the option to change, but just for this one time.
I'm saying this as someone completely content with my character, unless they add some extras like new hairstyles, I won't be touching this. I just know a lot of people who chose a race with only one gender options have expressed interest in going the opposite route when available, and I don't see why that is a problem. My only line in the sand is that this is a one time deal, as long as new races are not implemented down the line. This isn't WoW where you pretty much need to play every race to get the range of options and experience that game has to offer, so it's absurd to allow repeated changes for no particular reason. Not to mention the abuse of the unfortunate scenario of someone being universally reviled throughout the server for some reprehensible thing could easy get this quick fix plastic surgery and wipe their slate clean, only to ruin more players' enjoyment.
I think it's beyond safe to say that there will be the biggest of shit storms if Yoshi goes back on what he said about allowing us to change our characters once 2.0 comes out.
I just hope he's listening...
10/14/11 - FFXIV community civil war erupts. "I'm paying and the game is gonna be awesome." VS. "I'm leaving and the game is gonna die." Let the battles begin!
I vote for a one time only race/gender change for everyone (possibly 1 time name altering for those changing from male to female or vice versa) and then only being able to change your hairstyle and hair color there after. Since it was previously stated they were think of adding a salon type feature down the road.

Some people are still confused. We will be getting a one time free re-customization, (and Yoshida hasn't gone back on anything he has said so far, so we shouldn't worry about this changing.)
The question now is whether or not to offer changes afterward, and if so, what restrictions should be in place.

Thank you for clarifying this, Nabiri. Some people are still confused. We will be getting a one time free re-customization, (and Yoshida hasn't gone back on anything he has said so far, so we shouldn't worry about this changing.)

I think what Yoshi-P should do (and I'm sure others have suggested this as well) is just charge a ~$25 fee per character race change and character name change (if that's even decided on) after the initial race change at start up, and insert a say... three month cool-down between each change. Many other MMORPGs do this and to be honest, I don't see why XIV cannot.
Just my two cents. Hope you're reading this, Yoshi-P. *thumbs up*

I think race/gender change should be allowed through a fee per character and with a limit of once per month. Features changes should be allowed through in-game repeatable quests or consistent gil payment.
