Probably an unrelated question:
Tier-IV sells for 120K a pop on my server. How much crap do you guys craft to get a return on an investment that necessitates the overmelding of these things with a ridiculously low success chance of 15%?
Free Company ships bring tier III and IV crafter materia, I use that materia if there aren't crafters that need it. We have like 150 Craftmanship IV materia.
I understand what you mean, but given the fact that you could sell the Tier IV it doesn't change the math that makes me wonder whether crafting is actually worth it opposed to gathering which makes money making stupid easy.
Depending on RNG it could cost you over 3 Million gil to meld even ONE item. So far I just don't see the profit margins on my server to recoup that kind of investment before SE deploys a new patch which adds new gear and forces crafters to dump millions into the RNG yet again.
And what are you going to waste money with? Because right now we don't need more money. There's nothing to spend money on. Maybe materials for 2 star crafts but, we can gather those by ourselves.
What is the point in leveling & gearing a crafter then?
After all, as far as I can tell, they aren't able to make anything that eclipses the esoteric gear.
Is crafting really THAT self defeating?
I mean I'll level them to 60, but so far it's been hard to impossible to justify the needed time investment to progress further, since it doesn't seem to benefit my character at all.
This opinion has been shared by the many members of the crafting community since beginning of Heavensward.
Crafting uses currently:
1. Progression will make all the remaining easier and more reliable (this is no different than for DoW player which has completed all Savage at i203 and is still working towards full i210).
2. Items for current relic
3. Glamour
4. Easing the progression of newer players
5. Gil generation (pounding out the items for 1 and 2). Of course as you are already a member of largish FC and probably have a tripped out house (glamour again) and airships. Gil generation is not required.
6. Preparation for 3.2, the further you are along, less you'll need to increase at the next stage.
I can definitely see why.
Point 3 is invalid. You need to dump 10x the amount of gil (probably more) in order to get to the point to be able to craft your glamor stuff, since most stuff is 1* and above. Way cheaper to buy a NQ version of your desired gear from the MB.
If you start crafting now to make your own relic you will essentially lose money and waste A LOT of time. MUCH MUCH easier to level a gatherer, buy some basic gear and just sell crap. Also the red script grind is a joke to do on a gatherer. Much easier that capping esoterics, so great gatherer gear is lying on the street if you have a little patience.
If you ask me, the effort in regards to crafting currently is out of sync with the benefits. Something is afoot unless making crafting borderline useless is SEs desired design outcome.
Sad, really. I had a lot of fun toying with collectible rotations so far while leveling them to 60 once I understood how to use BB at the end.
Some of us just enjoy crafting for it's own sake.
I crafted 24 HW L60 2-Stars this morning on my LTW (and 1 NQ Griffin Leather). But on one Griffin Leather Ring, I miskeyed and totally wrecked the Rath's MaMa rotation I was using. It took me 10 minutes on the simulator to figure out a recovery rotation, but I did, and it worked, and I got HQ. I think things like that are fun. YMMV.
(I wasn't craft the stuff for sale. Rather, my wife and I were making 170 accessories and belts for our gathers, so we can easily hit 650 GP and various Gathering/Perception caps with the cheap food the Green Monkey vendor is selling at the Heavensturn event.)
Crafting is fun. Esp when you misstep and still somehow manage to salvage the situation (unless RNG screws you irrevocably)
What isn't fun is all the mandatory grind and RNG gil wasting associated with Overmelds and acquiring the materials in the first place.
Having to dump MILLIONS into some RNG black hole for INTERMEDIARY gear is utterly idiotic. The red script gear was supposed to be the casual alternative to get (you sacrifice uber highend stats for not having to overmeld) but the materials are so absurdly expensive and you need so many of them that it would cost just as much.
And it still doesn't address the problem that there is nothing interesting to craft once you get that gear.
