To actually take a serious, though slightly off-topic spin on your post, I really think that people "aiming for second" isn't as common as people think. I saw someone suggesting that when another GC doesn't even bother attacking the leaders and instead chooses to fight the others, it meant that they were fighting for second place; whereas most of the time that is really just a team paying attention to absolutely nothing that's going on and/or not having anyone giving out instructions in my experience. All of which, also somewhat comes down to both opposing GCs not playing properly if neither of them seem to be interested in hindering the leader. I'd bet that at least 90% of the time it's a simple case of most players not caring about anything other than a game of Team Deathmatch.
