    Custom Emotes/Role play

    I'm not exactly a new player so I'm a little late on this but, how do you create custom emotes? Also how do you implement other players name in the emote and is it necessary to use quotation marks in the emote? Sometimes I'll see players use quotation marks for long emotes and other times I'll see players not using quotation marks for shorter emotes

    "/em" is a chat mode just like "/say" "/shout" or "/fc" that makes what you type come out as an emote. You can type literally anything there, so you add player's names by typing them (You can also use <t> if you're targeting them)

    As far as quotation marks go, those are typically used to indicate that someone is talking. For example.

    /em slams his mug down on the table, ale sloshing everywhere. "You take back what you said about my father right now!"

    If you're looking to get into RP, you may wish to look at established RP communities to get a good idea for general RP etiquette, but a few pointers are as follows:

    1: Limit your power. Just because you CAN say your character is the strongest man alive and could decimate a city with a stray thought doesn't mean you should. Powerful characters are often boring and/or annoying, as they hog the spotlight and utterly ruin drama or tension. Do note that this also extends to political power, so claiming that you're a king, or the one true Warrior of Light are not recommended.

    2: Don't control other characters. It's not up to you to decide what happens to other characters. Whenever possible, avoid using words that assume what other people do, things like "/em skewers Randall through the chest before he can react" or "/em walks into the tavern, strumming his lute. Everyone can't help but stare in admiration." Other players deserve the right to react, especially if the action may have long-lasting consequences.

    I believe if you want to combine a standard emote for its motion with a custom message, that has to be done as two commands (at least that's the only way I know how to do it). If you want only your custom one to show up in the chat log, follow the standard emote command with the motion subcommand, like:
    /chuckle motion
    /emote can't keep his mirth contained.

    Including the placeholder <t> in your message will put the name of your target into it at that point. (There are a few other placeholder options, but your target is the one most likely to be useful for this purpose. Check out the "Placeholders" tab of this page if you want to find others.)


    (I haven't really done much with this. Other people may have better ideas.)

    Personally, I prefer the pattern:

    /em slams his mug down on the table, ale sloshing everywhere.
    /say You take back what you said about my father right now!

    But I've seen both patterns used, and can see that sometimes it just comes out easier to incorporate what's said into the middle of what's emoted.
