I know I'm a little late to the discussion, but hopefully this might help anyone else who might still have this problem.

It is possible to get positions to "stick" but it takes a lot of patience. The position of your camera matters when you are snapping to grid. If you want to connect two partitions, I would recommend standing your character in the part where the partitions meet, and swinging your camera up so you're looking as straight down on yourself as possible from the ceiling. Pick up the partition and let it snap to grid, place it, and do the same with the other partition. I do it over and over again back and forth (sometimes spinning the camera a little each time), until they stop moving, meaning when you pick it up and drop it, it stays in the same place, in line, with no gap. If I zoned and it moved, I didn't do it right and I had to try again. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I use a lot of partitions and am really particular about their positions and making sure they're in line, spaced correctly, etc. When I had done it right, I was able to zone many times and have them remain in line, even when I'm on another character.

Sorry if this is confusing. I wish I could explain it better.

I noticed too that when I select items from some camera angles, just selecting the furniture item itself will sometimes cause it to shift a small distance.

It's very odd, I've had funny things happen like a vase not being able to (in snap-to-grid mode) align to the center of a tabletop, unless I walk in close at a certain angle and look downwards at it before selecting it.
