Partially...you as the house owner. You have to keep the sidewalk clean, free of snow, the drainage on the street free of dead leaves and so on. If you don't do it you have to pay a fine.
Regarding maintenance of the road: we already pay tax on wages. That's where the government gets most of its money from. There is no specific "money X is gonna be used for task Y" rule in place (and why would there be? Non-home owners profit from well-kept roads too) so the whole budget is basically summed up and then it's getting decided what they need to spend it on - including road maintenance if there is a need for it.

(Of course tax evasion is a crime and you can go to jail for it. But even then your house isn't taken away, so...the US once again amazes me with its weird way of handling things^^)

Do you not know what property taxes are for? I don't know how it is in US, but in Canada (this might be Ontario only), cities cannot collect any tax except property taxes. These taxes are then used to pay for things like roads, plumbing, electrical, etc. Stuff you use, but can't maintain yourself. Shit breaks and they have to fix it unlike in a video game.

Of course, the province (the Canadian version of a state) also gives money to the cities as well.

Edit: Bringing in real world economic systems is dumb because we have to deal with the constraints the real world gives us. This is not the case in a video game. Taxes in a video game are usually used as a means of removing money in the game economy rather than a source of income (since devs can just poof things into existence). However even as a gil sink your idea is terrible and would probably drain all the money out or cause people to be so poor no one would buy houses lol.

I think this is a good idea if you want to murder the housing market in the game further, and ensure that players continue to leave out of frustration at the way systems are being handled. Players like myself have already spent enough time being extremely frustrated with the way housing has been handled from the day it was implemented, and for me tax would be the thing that makes me quit outright and never return. I already can't take more than a month break if I want to retain what I worked extremely hard to afford.

Punishing players for developer shortsightedness is not the solution.

Edit: If there's any system to really be pushing for it's an account-based limitation on housing. Players who own multiple personal and FC houses across multiple characters are holding a lot more land that could be given to people who want it.

You guys are so bitter for not having a house that you need to come up with such stupid ideas?

I detect a little salt. Looks like one special vulture didn't get the plot she was camping <3 So lets take out our rage on the undeserving bystanders.

I camped at MY chosen plot of land against 8 people, for 50 hours straight. That is MORE than taxing enough, both literally and figuratively. More houses are coming, just hunker down and wait. In the time you're spending being sour about it, think about the advantage you now possess!

You have up to 6 months to continue gathering/saving money. Instead of that small you were after, how about a medium? Were you getting a medium? Shoot for the stars, go big or go home! Get a large!

Ishgard homes are coming soon, be the first to have a snow-home.

There's no reason to be bitter. I went into this thinking there was no way I'd get a house, and I got lucky...but even if I hadn't, I'd have just sold my medium mog-walls and started saving for that large. ...and maybe bought myself a treat on MB.

    Dear god why?

The earliest they could have possibly been up (when the server came up today) was less than 15 hours before they actually did. Why would you have started late Tuesday night? What madness grips you?

Because there were already campers forming up at that time. Balmung's housing market is as cut-throat as Black Friday Sales. You either beat someone senseless with your shopping cart, or you go homeless.

I am also rather annoyed by people who hoard or buy houses and just hold them against people or sell them for outrages prices, but going on about 'punishing' those owners by taxing them or other crazy implementation to get them kicked out as soon as possible for something that's going to instantly get snatched anyways since housing is so in demand is dumb.

And now that I myself own a house, I don't make a lot of gil in general, I have no interest to craft, and I want to return the money back to my friends who helped me, what is going to happen if there's a 1-2 mil tax going around? I get a house for us and then what? Lose it a month later, work my ass, or mooch off my friends who need their money for their own projects to make ends meet? I think that would make me rather sad.

What a cool idea. Lets add even more punishing mechanics to house owners so they might decide to abandon their house and i have a 1/5000 chance of getting it as they do that.

1-3m a month? Lol, I don't think so. While I do think a tax would add a little more to the entire aspect of being immersed in home ownership I think anything over 50k is ludicrous.
