Just to say while true we have no real information it doesnt take much to look at the past and see the issues we now have will be repeated if it is kept in a similar manner.

I'm still curious as to what a mentor will actually do once they are sorted with a newbie. Will they go into a dungeon? Or the training hall? Or is it just like a chat? Will we only be sorted with people of the same class/job? If so, how will Arcanist be hangled with Scholar and Summoner?

I imagine a system where the player in need has not completed the trial or dungeon more then X number of times, allowing them to initiate a "training" option. Players looking to Mentor can select to do so in duty finder. Once inside the instance it is run as usual, but at the end a new commendation system would be introduced where each player MUST either give the Mentor player a commendation or pass. Each commendation would give some Type of bonus. A single would give some small bonus, 2 a slightly better bonus, and a full party commendation would give special bonus. As for the other players there could be other bonus incentives, like no party deaths, time of completion, avoided AoE and so on. Give everyone a reason to use the system, but also make it a system with nothing to offer those that wish to abuse it.
When I saw the mentor system was coming I immediately thought of new players searching for older players to help them power level. Probably get a lot of "I don't care how to play my class or the game. I'll learn that when I get to end game."
So, in other words, you'll ignore the very things that are put into the game to add variety and teach players how to zerg things down by overgearing and burning? Really?
I never played FFXI so I don't know the context of Ma'at, but I'm guessing that it was part of, or similar to the difficulty of end-game content in FFXI?
The thing is though, a mentor system is there to encourage and help new players so does it matter if the mentors are end-game players or not. What matters is that they can fulfill the role of mentor, whether that be coaching, or simply helping new players complete the content that they need to progress, and hopefully also help them learn their job(s) and role(s).
Sometimes it seems that the players who do not focus as much on progression and end-game are more suited to mentoring the brand new players, simply because they; a) have more time for others, b) have a more selfless approach since gear is not paramount to them, and c) are less competitive and more cooperative in nature (this is from personal observation). Brand new player need to be shown the game and helped through the MSQ by a mentor that can work at their pace.
Once a new player progresses to the point where they can enter end-game, they no longer need that kind of mentor. That would be when players in the end-game community who can and want to make time to act as a mentor can take on the new player and help them progress into the End-game. It is in a sense horses for courses.
I find it sad that you think that way. You and I clearly do not play the same game.
Well you definitely not going to find a elitist (this could cover many areas) as a mentor cause they could care less about helping others unless it serves them self which guess this thread is talking about.
I can totally see how this will end up.

"What do? We can't kill the boss!"
"Kill the adds!"
