There's a very loose role-trinity in play. Tanks crush melee. Melee have the ability to crush ranged/casters (gap closers, Weapon Throw, etc.) As Knives said, tanks don't have the greatest mobility, giving ranged/casters an edge on them as long as they don't let the tank get close.
Pretty much my experience, as well. However slight, the trend for this to be true is there.
