It's not so much where an Expansion can be set, but when.
I suggest that there be an Expansion that sends us back to the War of Magi, where we can see Nym, Amdapor, and Mhach and learn more about them.

While that would be cool and I wouldn't be surprised if it happens at some point, I see that being late in the life of ffxiv, once a majority of the development team has moved on to something else. They would be reusing a lot of the existing locations and art assets, maybe cleaning them up so they don't look ruined. I think they've done something like that in FFXIV with the last expansion, and Warcraft is wrapping up a really underwhelming expansion based on a similar concept.
I DO enjoy the story of this war being covered more in the current storyline. We've had a dungeon, black mage and scholar story quests, and now Void Ark, all examining this time and crisis, much as we examined the Allagan Empire via Crystal Tower, Coil, and Ays Lla.
So I guess I want them to continue exploring those events through new content, or maybe even a time compression raid, rather than an entire expansion set in the locations we already know.
I always liked the idea of going back in time to an ancient city. The way I would see it working, is that you go to its location, and you use a certain object. Once you activate the object, it would show the city like a memory of the past. Maybe it would be a triggered memory, or a dream like Dream Zanarkand.
XI's Wings of the Goddess had so much potential....
It definitely had alot more, but I think they limited it far too much by making it the Crystal War, only 20 years prior. They kept jumping around how the characters of the present would forget about you in the past, but at the same time, had them remember bits and pieces (Like in the San d'Oria line), whilst forgetting completely until the expansion turned up. It was made into a big mess that got rushed at the very end.
Something like this, going way back into the past, would be able to work a lot better.
Whilst this would be great, and could draw heavily on FFXI's Wings of the Goddess expansion, this likely won't happen for a long while yet. There are some more immediate issues that need to be dealt with over the next couple of expansions. This might be the sort of thing we'll see after the current main scenario has concluded.
Agreed, the next expansion will definitely deal closer to "home" I suppose, given how predictable (still good) the story is being so far. Probably after 2-3 more expansions they'll try their hand at the whole time travel thing, plus they'll have more content to work with.Whilst this would be great, and could draw heavily on FFXI's Wings of the Goddess expansion, this likely won't happen for a long while yet.
