    PvP Classes

I am looking for tips for PvP. I play DRG and I'm not nearly as explosive as other DRGs or NIN or even BRDs. I try to use Heavy Thrust, then CT combo, then FT combo, and keep Blood for Blood and Battle Litany rolling...but that takes so long and by then I'm usually dead..1v1 I sometimes win vs BRD or MNK, but 1v2 I ALWAYS lose.

Then I see a WAR go 1v3 and survive...Yes, I've literally seen both WAR and PLD take on multiple players at a time, if there are no healers, the tank ALWAYS wins.

    What am I doing wrong?

Just curious, do you utilize your PvP skills? All of them are amazing, really. Impulse Rush not as much as the others but the improved critical hit chance is a force to be reckoned with.

I would take a guess you are having trouble determining who you can take on alone, in a group, or who to go after first. As any melee dps, you need to "get in fast, get out fast". Mark the target you want to down, and wail on them with Fetter Ward. If they are getting healed for more than you're outputting, you should as a group quickly focus a different target or have someone distract/pressure the healer.

PvP is coordinated gameplay, rotations are important to a degree but there is a line-of-sight and approach mechanism that comes to you over time as you play. Knowing the capabilities of all the jobs helps quite a bit (knowing all their skills) and playing a pressure game works wonders.

I use a handful of my skills, mostly the defensive ones. Skewer to chase them down, fetter ward, and the other to cure bind effects and the heal...never run out of TP..

I think my biggest struggle is finding out who to attack.

An overwhelming majority of the time as a melee in PvP, the answer to that is "anyone you can hit." Don't reach too hard for targets. Play using gureilla tactics. Go in, go ham on someone, get out. It's okay if you don't kill them so long as you don't die, so don't be afraid to retreat when needed. Make players who extend too far into your allies and away from their own your primary targets. Stun them, burst them, watch most of your allies follow suit. Give healers a bad day and harass them until they cry (just not your healers - running into a group of 10 enemies alone is the wrong form of healer harassment).

Honestly, don't think too hard about it. Just roll with it, as far as who to target. Know when to go in and when to get out. Aside from that, just make sure you're always hitting SOMETHING if you can, even if it's seemingly useless.

If you're incompetent, you can’t know you’re incompetent. The skills you need to produce a right answer are exactly the skills you need to recognize what a right answer is.

As a DRG should I bother with CT combo? HT is a no brainier because it's quick and increases MY damage. However, I feel like CT ONLY affects who I'm hitting if they run away and I have to attack someone else the rebuff was wasted, and the time spent casting it could be better used on a FT combo.

I've noticed the biggest bang for my buck is Jump. It's fast, and hits hard. With HT, BfB, BL, and the jump damage boost, I can hit squishier classes (BRD, MNK, NIN, BLM, SMN, MCH) for nearly half of their life...but if I don't finish them off, they always have a healer topping them off...

I found this post helpful as drg. the piercing resist down from disembowel helps with the rest of your burst. .

On a target that you anticipate will be alive for a while it can definitely be worth it, mostly I will try to single out a black mage or summoner and wait for them to get decently close to the front of their teams line, pop bfb, internal release, spirit Surge, blood of the Dragon, battle Litany, Sprint, invigorate, bloodbath, and mantra, and fetter ward it may sound like a lot of prep time on all those buffs but it's worth it for the burst imo. I'll spineshatter over to my target, execute heavy Thrust followed by a full Thrust combo while weaving in jump leg sweep impulse rush and a geirskogul if they are still alive and trying to run. In general and unless your target has a healer that is really fast they will die long before you even complete the combo, will also work in a 1v1 situation as well, it's a serious amount of damage output, of course adjust to your battle situations as required, you may need a weapon throw, or you may want to skewer for the INT down on those casters plus it's off global cooldown damage. Another ability of note that will also help you immensely to get kills is mercy stroke, must have as a good finisher.
