    Item Finder / Inventory

Let's play a game of "Where is it?!", featuring:
    • Your Inventory (including crystals and key items)
    • Your Armoury
    • The Armoire
    • All of your retainers (2-8) (Items you have up for sale should be included, but visually called out)
    • Your Free Company room (furnishings, floors, walls, lights, etc.)
    • Your personal housing estate (all the things:indoors and outdoors)
    • The Calamity Salvager: Item reclaim (because you STILL haven't recovered everything from 1.0)
    • The Calamity Salvager: Shops (unique items you've gained access to being able to re-purchase instead of regrinding.)
    • Resident Caretaker (Estate Possession Retrieval)

    With Special Guest appearances from:
    • Your free company's estate (if you own anything placed)
    • Any estates that have been shared with you
    • Moogle Mailbox (only messages that have been read, but the items have not been retrieved)

Remembering WHAT thing I stored WHERE is something that slows me down on a regular basis is.

... I think that is every possible place an item associated with your character could be stored. Did I miss anything?

There is already a good user interface for finding items and filtering searches. The market boards! It handles multiple stacks just fine and identifies its location (the retainer selling it).

Perhaps there could be an NPC vendor and/or furnishing that could allow you to run the same kind of search, only against all of the above instead of the market boards.

Prices would not be relevant unless the source is the calamity savager shop. Prices might be useful for items your retainers are selling, but they may need a different treatment to avoid confusion and allow you to more clearly reevaluate your options. "Oh, no I could use that, but it is up for sale, maybe I should take that off the market before it sells."

A nice to have would be the ability to see where your gil is as well. (on you, your retainer, or the moogle mailbox).

So why did I bother separating a few things into "special guests"? Because I expect those particular systems to be complicated or impossible because of how they might work behind the scenes.

The UI may need some adjustments to accommodate the new use case, but the general idea feels like it is mostly done. There is already the ability to narrow the scope by level for gear. You can browse or search by text.

If sorting were to be adding, sorting by item name and item ilevel makes sense. Maybe stack quantity, but I'm not sure how useful that would be. Maybe sort by slot for gear.

I think this, or something in the spirit of this, would be a great enhancement to the quality of life. This could even be used as graphical result for "search for item" to supplement what shows in the chat log.

I am not suggesting that this NPC or furnishing would allow you to you to manage all these locations in one place because I think I heard once that where you access or modify certain data can affect stability of the server. Maybe it was in a developer post or a live letter. It is one of the reasons why we don't have access to everything everywhere. Once you know where the item is, you would still need to find the nearest summoning bell, armoire, etc. to get to your items.

The search results would not list items that you don't own or are not on the Calamity Salvager. They would have to list items that wouldn't normally be listable on the markets (because we are not searching the markets!) This includes dated or otherwise untradable items. If additional forms of storage ever appear, they should be included in search results as well.

This kind of interface may be worth having additional filters specific.
    • Items available for a limited time (estate reclamation)
    • Items that you have up for sale
    • Items you have to spend gil/currency to (re)aquire (Calamity Salvager)
    • Unclaimed moogle mail
    • All things that don't match the above
    • Show me all armor & accessories that a specific class/job can equip. (weapons are already unique)

You can edit your post to bypass the 1000 character limit.

Also, if you're trying to find a particular item, there is an option to search your inventory, armoury, retainers, etc to see if and where you have the item.

    Examples:

Thanks Darkstride. I know about those and unfortunately isn't the use case I'm looking for though. I'm looking to add a additional functionality and a graphical layer to the following command:

    /itemsearch
    ALIASES:
     /itemsearch, /isearch
    USAGE:
     /isearch [item name]

→Conducts a complete search of your inventory for all items you own, including equipped gear, items held or equipped by retainers, and items stored in your Armoury Chest and armoire. Command cannot be used in a macro.

The "Search for Item" selection and the "/itemsearch" text command are the same function, just two ways of getting to it. I really like the suggestions for expanding where all it checks. Adding a graphical UI for it is less important, but would still be a nice-to-have.

The retainers' sell slots are the part that throws me off the most often. I've several times bought stuff I needed, only afterwards realizing I already had it but the search hadn't found it because I had it up for sale. But yes, it would be nice if, in addition to the inventory, armoury, and retainer's inventory that it already checks, it also checked retainers' MB sell slots, their equipped gear, the Armoire, your house or room, and the The Calamity Salvager's item reclaim. I also think that if you have withdrawal privileges from your FC's chest, that it should be included as well.

I'm less certain of whether the Calamity Salvager shops count. You don't exactly have those items, since it's just the right to purchase them there that has been unlocked. If they'd expand the search abilities to show both where you have items and where you can get them, the Calamity Salvager might be a better fit there.

Which brings me to a somewhat off-topic topic:
I'd like to see a general "where can I get this" feature added to the game, to show which items are purchasable, which are craftable, which come from gathering nodes, which are loot drops, which are quest rewards, etc. There are several out-of-game sources for that sort of information (lodestone, xivdb, libra eorzea, etc.), but not only is it more awkward to have that information be from an outside source, but those sources can't take your character's access into account. The Calamity Salvager shops only sell you stuff you've earned before. The beast tribe vendors will only sell you stuff if you have the right reputation with them. If something can be a quest reward, is that quest currently available to you? ...and so on. If something like the Lodestone or Libra Eorzea item database were incorporated into the game itself, it could have access to checking all those things.
