Bring back the region rules from FF8, and make the regions various areas like the Shroud, Gridania, Ul'dah, Thanalan, Limsa Lominsa, La Noscea, Mor Dhona, Coerthas, Ishgard, Idyllshire, Dravania, and the Spine. Why? We can change up the rules in each region and how many stars you can use per deck in each different region every week. Make the NPCs abide by these rules too, and you have yourself a constantly changing, constantly interesting Triple Triad.
I think this is what they tried to accomplish by letting you set your own rules. Say Gridania had a rule set that was generally unfavored by the player base, then we would all flock to a different region and gather around. That would stress the servers, especially if it happens to be an already populated area at the time due to FATEs, Relic grinds, etc.

Unless the rulesets happened to evolve as fast as they did in FF8. If you kept starting and then cancelling games in FF8, one or both of the rules would be changed, the game realizing that one of them was not liked. If SE were able to pull out some sort of algorithm to do it here, it could go way better than a weekly change, it could possibly end up being a daily change. That's a big if though, and it may be pretty hard to set up in terms of code.
