I tank because I forgot to use Quelling Strikes.

You're both right. The tank cannot heal with an axe, nor can the healer tank with their face. If you think a healer alone is what keeps the party afloat...well, I have news for you.

As someone who's played as all jobs, including the ones with Quelling Strikes available to them and I end up pulling aggro because I forgot to use it, I feel for ya on that... and lol'd. Sadly, I sometimes STILL pull aggro even when I DO use Quelling Strikes. XD
Which actually leads me to my main reason for Tanking. Having personal experience with how fast a squishy mage can die while having the aggro of the boss, it just makes me appreciate good Tanks all that much more. And what better way to make sure the team has a good Tank then by playing as one myself? I'm by no means perfect, but better to have a good Tank on your team then a bad one yes?
That... and I kinda grew into it after initially never liking the idea of being a Tank in MMO's. There's something about being that guy who has the eyes of all the monsters on him, laughing as the enemies try to kill you (assuming your healer is keeping up with you) and protecting your party from attacks that would easily take away about 25%, if not more, of their HP in a single hit... and the DPS in return laughing as the enemies keep trying to kill the guy with the highest defense stat while they tear apart/blow up the enemies in question.
Oh hey, I posted on this forum for the first time in awhile.

This is my philosophy:
The Healer's job is to keep the party alive, while the Tank's job is to keep the party safe. On their own, both are relatively meaningless but when together is when the party thrives. A tad idealistic I know, but what's wrong with that?

Because 1. It's a little easier than healing. 2. If Anyone dies, it's likely not my fault, and if *I* die it's either my fault or the healer's.![]()

Shorter queues
Doing roulettes is more efficient
I was a SMN at the start hit 50 and well the lack of tanks made doing any thing a pain in the arse.
That made me go screw it if there is no tanks around might as well become one and enjoy all the free instant partys and well never looked back.
I all so happen to enjoy been a tank its fun can be a pain to learn some fights and the fact you are expected to know every dam boss fight inside out and to teach every one how its done.
I like how a healer or dps can go its my first time no one could care less say it as a tank did you watch the vid NO WTF you are a tank you have to know.

Had a run where the tank (in all str gear) charged right out of the gate without even waiting for protect. He would then try to pull the entire dungeon without using a cooldown during the pull, or after stopping. Then proceeds to tunnel vision in on one mob, using zero AOE enmity abilities, giving me as the healer aggro the instant I cast a cure. Of course we wipe, repeatedly, because he keeps doing it.
Why do I tank? So I don't have to put up with that kind of gong show ever again!
