It doesn't have to be like that you know.
You can easily have it so that some skills have certain affects during regular play (PvE) and then a different affect during PvP.
Guild Wars proved that this works and it works well.

Common sense on this matter is that it would be a good (and likely) marketing move for SE to implement PvP simultaneously with PS3 release. Seriously, what better time than on the day of FFXIV's revival?

Console gamers are not like us. They are impatient and want instant action and have become accustomed to competitive online games. I want to see FFXIV succeed more than anything but it will fail if there is no PvP.

PvP + PS3 release = double the subscribers. PvP catches people's opinion double fold. We former FFXI players came to know and love the FF franchise for the PvE environment with PvP being only secondary but we are a minority. The dev team recognizes that in order to exceed expectations for FFXIV there must be both captivating PvE and exhilarating PvP.

Anyway, all I'm saying is this: the game's core has been culminating around our feedback since alpha. And since alpha no one has given 2 shits about PvP. Well guess what guys, PvP is coming whether you like it or not. Show the dev team a little enthusiasm damn!
