Oh my good, golly, GOSH! Sarahnight you are literally the best!! This worked like a charm for me and I'm still on yosemiteSeems like it only works on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.x... It worked for me there...
When i tried on Yosemite, it does exactly what you guys are describing, launches and remains resident but does not do anything, no launcher, no game, no luck... You can use Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder to see FFXIV running and doing nothing. You can also Force Quit it there, without having to restart your computer.
UPDATE!
Go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General tab...
Allow apps downloaded from:
CHANGE TO: Anywhere
Save and close System Preferences.
Kill FFXIV if its currently trying to run...
Launch it again, it should now work.
Seems like they didn't get their certificates right on the App. So Gatekeeper is blocking it. Good Luck!Oh my days, you have no idea how happy this made me!
