I was never able to get replicas of ANY stage unless I had the appropriate zeta in my inventory somewhere. Anything short of a zeta = no replicas.

Really, I'd like to know where. I like OP had a Zeta(Nin in my case,) but didn't know of the quest The Vital Title and now can't take the quest as you need your Zetas equipped to take it. The only version of the Relic weapon available for purchase that I've ever seen is the Pre Zenith version from the Calamity guy.
I was rather attached to those blades and planed on using them as glamors even through the new quest line and was very upset at this. Thought it'd be achievment/quest based like the various things you can rebuy at the Calamity Salvager.

I know the calamity salvager sells the base relic. Iirc he also sells (with the exception of Zeta relics) all of the completed upgrades.

Nope. The only way to get replicas of the other stages is to buy them from Drake. And he only sells the different stages of completed zetas. And you need to have completed the quest "The Vital Title". The only thing that has changed now, is that you can buy replicas of the zeta stage, and that you only need to have gotten a zeta once to unlock the replicas, as opposed to needing to have it in your inventory.

It might not have been intuitive it even existed, like the Pharos Sirius followup quest that blocked unlocking Pharos Sirius (hard).

How is that not intuitive? You're progressing the story of Pharos Sirius because the HM is a continuation of the story.

I think they were talking about how easy it is to not notice the followup quest, since it appears back in Aleport after you complete Pharos Sirius for the first time. Unless you are a person that does every quest, or are paying a lot of attention, you are likely to never even notice that that quest exists.

The same argument does not really work for "The Vital Title" though, since you need to talk to the questgiver to be able to upgrade your weapon.. The quest is right in front of your face from the moment you upgrade your Zodiac weapon to Zeta.
