The game has changed a lot since 2.0. I have gone back and played through 2.0 twice now and doig it a 3rd time. much better than playing through 3.0 and I have done that twice. 2.0 crafting is more fun. the gear was more interesting. No free gear hand outs in MSQ to wreck the MB. Relic right off the bat at lvl 50 in 2.0. Relic should have been in at 3.0 launch and not 2 days from now. I spend more time in 2.0 content with my main than I do in any 3.0 content. The weekly primal quest for an i90 weapon. Still fun.

Right now reset eso cap Tuesday/Wednesday with a quick void ark run. Red scrip Thursdays. (WTF is the i170 gathering gear and main hand to craft?). Out side of that it is back to playing a low level alt in 2.0 content or another game.

Aside from trivializing content almost immediately with vertical progression, the raiding scene is punishing, not challenging. We need less linear content, more content that is actually challenging(not punishing), and to not trivialize that content so quickly.

    Wow I just realized this...and that is very sad. Also yeah, I agree with your FFXI comment. I have no idea why this dev team is so afraid to put in stuff from XI. Don't have to put in the bad..they could put in the good, long lasting, enjoyable content. Anyway, perhaps it will be like old times..they won't do something until its too late like usual ^^;

Most of my server's top raiding guilds are gone now. I think all but one or two of the several we had during ARR either left or transferred (most of them to Gilgamesh, from what I've been able to gather). And when the entire FCs didn't go, prominent members among the raiding talent went by themselves looking for a raiding community better suited to Savage. That's only one server but many smaller servers seem to have experienced similar emigration.

    Correction: With quick progression.

It doesn't matter whether you progress horizontally or vertically, the moment you have all you wanted/needed out of a certain piece of content, it's done and gone. The faster you progress, the faster things become irrelevant, as the progression process itself makes content irrelevant. Don't fool yourself thinking horizontal progression would change anything if all the situational items, traits and skills were as easy and quick to obtain as the vertical levels and items.

No. If you want it to last, make it painful, gated behind long grinds and RNG, ideally not even soloable. Either that, or fun enough that people run it for the lulz.

I'm still not sure how someone who doesn't even raid can comment about the raiding scene with so much thought like they do, and throw out opinions and argue with others like they know what they are talking about from experience, they can't even come to understand the flaws and problems with it. This is like a random X person giving medical advice and arguing about medical facts with doctors just because he read some stuff somewhere and now he's a medicine expert.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the game faces is a two fold problem; SE is trying to satisfy two very different audiences with content for the end-game raiding scene and content for the more casual or mainstream players who are not heavily into end-game. So they produce a broad range of content.

SE is stuck between a rock and a hard place, when they do something to satisfy one group, it annoys another, and vice versa. SE can't really win in that situation. To be honest I think that Yoshi and team should stop trying to patch and develop the game by focus groups or popularity contests, and stick to their vision of the game. I think the game would be stronger if they did.
XIV doesnt have a dev vision. It has yoship's vision. To know what it is i invite you to read the 3.1 dungeon devblog post.

It was so depressing to upgrade my legs 3 times last night within in a hour. Which I'm not sure as to why people don't speak up for wanting a token equipment resell period like they have in other games like WoW. Those games allow you to buy an item with tokens and give you 2 hours to resell it, which would've been perfect for me last night....
I just wonder then why we continued to play 1.x and 2.x but losing interest in 3.x?
Did they do something different in 1.x and 2.x?
In 1.x we had ACTIVE gamemasters doing some interesting quests and they were TALKING with players, even in 2.x we could meet sometimes the "reporters"
In 2.x it started fine with darklight gear and stonefarming, it was balanced... but in 3.x its just a mess with all that different currencies and stupid "payments" or "requirements" - try to craft ifrit minion or other things...
In 2.x we could get minions from chests in dungeons 100% and it was fun - i have seen players trying to get them even one year after the dungeon was released... and we could give them to friends who just started to play, it was not locked behind ridiculous droprates and RNG

The dead only for crafting IMO (Gatherer somehow). I don't have motivation to collect AF2 crafting gear

The problem is that they didn't really do anything truly different with the expansion. Instead they took the exact same content styles and made them grindier.

People were already starting to burn out around the 2.4/2.5 mark but the promise of the expansion kept them playing. When the expansion just gave us all more of the same a huge number of players lost faith in the development team to keep us entertained. It's clear the added grind elements were introduced to try and keep players interested longer but instead for many it has made things entirely unobtainable (look at crafting/gathering for example).

What this game desperately needed with 3.0 was a new character progression system. Some form of alternative advancement. Almost every MMO I have ever played introduced something like this with its first expansion as it gives players long-term goals and an overarching sense of progress beyond all the individual repetitive dungeon runs. Some more interesting equipment stats that makes players genuinely excited to get a drop wouldn't hurt either.
