    Spoilers! A certain characters eyes

Something I easily noticed today when I reached the part within the main story where you retrieve a cat thing from the Lifestream... Y'shtola, her eyes are very milky/white now compared with before her trip into said Lifestream. Perhaps this is a side-effect of being doused in aether for a period of time and not having a physical form?

Oh, another thing, she also happened to mention that she can now sense aether much more easily than before...

You'll find out the reason and a bit more detailed what happened when you get to the 59 quests. Personally I'm surprised that no one mentioned that feature until the person's mentor does.

True, right? It was the first thing I noticed during the cutscene and I was like: "Damn, she's blind now". But suddenly she sais she can see something different in Alphinaud and that maybe her stay in the Lifestream has changed her eyesight perception, so I was "Wait... her eyes depict blindness... yet she sais she can see..."

It was right when Matoya brought it up that I was right in my thoughts and that Y'shtola was employing her own lifeforce to be able to see, albeit differently.

Well in a sense that she was struggling to maintain herself in the lifestream all this time. She also learned and gained new spells and senses. But the forbidden technique seem to have left her actually blinded, but not really. You see she can now see everything through aether form, but at a cost of her own lifeforce. Matoya was truly concerned considering the spell she used was very dangerous. We can also assume that her powerful spells also use some hint of her LF too. Talk about commitment.

Ahh, funny that, I was actually thinking that they looked as though they were in fact blinded.

Shes not blinded. You can see that how she focus on us when we see her the first time awake. She also tells you that she CAN see the aether flow not "i see you through the aetherflow". They would need to redo y'shtola everytime we meet her because lifeforce draining usually goes hand in hand with rapid aging. i dont think they want to throw away such a precious character easily *is secretly in love with shtola*

No, she's blind, at least in the traditional sense. Matoya point blank asks when "the light faded from [her] eyes" and warns her that her method of compensation will drain her lifeforce. They never really explained how her new aether sense works, but it's unlikely that she perceives the world normally anymore. Instead she probably has something more akin to sonar or echolocation than actual sight.

With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.

So how is this similar to how the Garlians see aether via a white looking third eye, and if so then why can she still use magics.

Because for starters, the Garleans still have their normal sight.

As for the magic. I think the Garleans cannot use Aether like the other races because they do not have as much aether as the other races. They know how it works and how to artificlay produce it to power their machines, but they do not have enought for even a simple teleport spell

Thancred's case is similar, the trip thought the Lifesteam did drain him of all his aether to the point where he has as much as a Garlean and it is unlikely that he'll even regain that lost aether again.

Also I think Minfilia might have sabotaged the spell, causing it to spare Y'sholta's aether but take away her sight as the "toll" through the lifesteam.
