I thought it made perfect sense in English as Elixir Field. Elixir has many different meaning, like for one example it can mean 'concentrated essence'.

An elixir may be a cure, but a concentrated amount of any cure can and may worsen the consumers health. A MNK who has opened up all their Chakras could just know a way to harness the essence and release it as a burst. A highly concentrated amount could simply result in an explosion instead.

Elixir has another meaning other than the medicinal one. It can mean an underlying principle/quintessence as well.

How ever this is not what this move referes to. It actually refers to the chinese martial arts principle of Dantian (literal translation is "Elixir Field"). These are focal points on the body that are believed hold the meditative energy/body energy in general. Its an apt name for this move which is about releasing energy that has been stored.

Many martial arts hold similar beliefs, with the energy being known as Chi in chinese arts and ki in japanese (years of Aikido practise is where i know about this from).

Or you know, the whole thing about Knight (ナイト) being renamed Paladin in English. Because being a free paladin (palace knight) makes more sense than being a free knight? I mean, knight certainly wasn't the name of a class in Final Fantasy 1, 3, 5, 9, 12, tactics, chocobo dungeon, etc. And why not change the name of an entire class, because you'll NEVER encounter a situation later where the Japanese development team is using the name of the class a certain way, and your new name doesn't work quite right in that situation? Nah, that wouldn't happen.

This is one I let slide, because it has precedent in FFXI and it makes sense (mostly). In FF, Knight and Paladin skill sets have pretty much been the same (Swords, 2hand, Cover, minor White Magic). In XIV, especially with how free paladins are described, we're pretty much supposed to be what the inspiration for the modern paladin character class is - a heroic superknight with some supernatural power. It's kind of an "all paladins are knights but not all knights are paladins" thing.

Another reason they probably translated it this way though is to distinguish between the jobclass Knight and, for example, an Ishgardian knight. In Japanland you can do ナイト/騎士 (though I haven't looked at the Japanese script at all and my Japanese is terrible, so maybe they don't), but we can't. Also maybe they wanted to avoid having Knight, Dragon Knight, and Dark Knight.

Also by "the worst change" I really meant I just want those titles. The actual worst is probably the -ra/-aga spell naming tiers being changed. Still think that's unneeded.

I have no issues with Elixir Field. I definitely think that "White Knight" and "Bloody Warrior" are way better than "Meat Shield" and "Meat Axe," though. Jeez, way to drop the ball with those ones.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually use those titles. They don't sound cool, they sound gross.

I'd say they should just rename Elixir Field into Shinkuu Hadoken if it wouldn't get them sued. As for the replies saying that elixir can mean other things; you are correct, but that's not what most people are going to think of, especially in a game where an Elixir is an item that definitely IS what most people expect. Even knowing that, the name still sounds wonky to me, personally.

Those tank title changes are just horrid, though, if that's true. White Knight and Bloody Warrior are great titles, but I've literally never seen anyone use the Meat titles even if I know they have the mounts because...well mostly they sound stupid, especially Meat Axe. And then they stop doing this for the one tank class where this would be hilarious. If you're not gonna subject DRK to it for laughs, then change the PLD and WAR ones to something cool.

I'd probably even take "Blue Spirit Gun" over that. I don't know what a Shinkuu is, and I only know what I Hadoken is thanks to Street Fighter. To a layman not interested in Japanese or random anime, Elixir Field makes far more sense.

That's ALSO from Street Fighter, man. It was a joke. To rename it into the Street Fighter thing.
