Numbers stopped players from buying houses.
There are 1,440 houses avalible on every server, 92,160 houses across all servers. When last I heard the figure there have been 5 million different paying accounts. Assuming only 1 out of 10 of those still play that would mean there are more than 400 thousand players without personal housing or if only 1 out of 20 are still playing there would still be more than 150,000 players without access to housing. Of course many of those avalible slots are taken by free companies, which would of course limit the avalible options for personal housing, and there are no doubt thousands of free companies still desirous of a house.
Also some of those slots cost upwards of 30million Gil which would put them out of the realm of possibility for many solo players and many other players started the game after many (or all) of the houses were bought up.
Some of us managed to snag houses when there were still plots free, which is wonderful for us, but the housing system needs to support the entire playerbase and not just those few who bought in early.
A true paladin... will sheathe his sword.

Some players also own two or more houses for whatever reason. I once knew of a free company that literally owned 15 different plots on Gilgamesh. They bought rank 8 FCs and then bought properties with them to use for Gardening and Role Play keeping those FCs on alts.Numbers stopped players from buying houses.

Not necessarily, when smaller servers happen to have the same amount of houses as larger server (who thought that made sense?) then it's a situation where plots are empty on smaller servers but full on larger servers. Before someone says "Then move servers, your fault for going to a populated server.", sure, mind setting up an Oceanic datacentre for me?![]()

Of course?
I have a perfect house right next to a market board that I can now share with my RL partner. It can't get more perfect for me, there are other ways they can 'redo' it that don't involve hampering the commitment of those who have one.

We should do a sundrop dance protest so they might make a datacenter for us.Not necessarily, when smaller servers happen to have the same amount of houses as larger server (who thought that made sense?) then it's a situation where plots are empty on smaller servers but full on larger servers. Maybe Yoshido will bless us with a "Maybe in 10 years".
Now that WTFast is dropping their free option I'm going to end up paying $26 a month for this damned game, that's if the AUD doesn't drop any further. /sigh 3.2 best be an amazing patch.

Other than, you know, the fact that I wasn't playing the game then. I've only been here for about six months now.
New players exist. Free plots, though? Few and far between.

SE already said, the 'reclaim' was the first 'fix' to the situation. That has been implemented.
Also, house sharing is now a thing...so if you don't personally own a place, see if a friend who does would let you move in. But just being able to share takes some of the 'wannabe homeowners' off the market b/c they can now happily share w/ a spouse/partner/friend etc -which in many cases, was preferred over owning 2 anyway.
SE has also said they are currently working on a system to allow people to 'move' from one house to another. I suspect this is to fix the 'workshop' problem FC's have atm. But once they figure out how to let people move w/o loosing their workshop progress/maybe rare items, they were considering opening up Ishgard Housing as an option.
Ishgard is likely where the true 'fix' will happen.
Should it have taken this long. Well no. But they are working on it...without taking away stuff from active homeowners. That seems more win/win than any other solution.
Also 12-13 days more and plots will open up on every server. You've all had months of warning, so not having the gil+logging in when the first wave of foreclosures happens, would now be solidly on you. (If you really want a home bad enough I mean)....but even if you can't right now...after the 24th/25th....homes will randomly open up...you might just need to pay max to own them (which is still cheaper in most cases than the 'player sale' method).
