Just adding my two cents to this, but here's a few things I'd like to see if this system were to be added:
Perhaps as you level-up your monster, you can 'unlock' new 'skins' for it or something. Like, for example, leveling up as a Dodo eventually unlocks Gastornis-colored plumage. Another funny thing would be if you could equip special accessories. I'm thinking something like in FFXIII-2, where you could, for example, get a Carbuncle plush and mount it on a monster's head or back.

Another interesting option would be if they gave each monster its own unique "Limit Break". I'd personally prefer that it work more like the Adrenaline Rush mechanic, or otherwise be usable without stealing the option to use it from another monster in your party.

Finally, not only would I like to see Chocobos as an option in this system, but I'd like to see more than just the basic yellow 'bos. Perhaps each one had its own unique skills, or maybe they're all just alternate skins as I described above; I wouldn't really care, so long as I get to run around as a Red Chocobo, dropping space rocks on monsters' heads.
