You make more money if you craft guaranteed but... the gil investment early on is higher. But the returns are better.

Never use materia, always sell it for fat stacks of gil.
Craft/gather materia has a use. I don't see how combat materia does considering there's no endgame stuff that even allows melding. Why does that stuff sell so high?
